Inspiration

For the last few years I have had issues finding patterns outside of scarves and hats that are suitable ‘for him’. There are oodles of patterns out there ‘for her’ and for children. I wanted to create a collection of patterns that were suitable as gifts for the men in our lives.

The stag seemed to fit in perfectly with what I was looking for and thinking about. Stags are, of course, male, strong, and protective but have a sweet, caring, gentle side.

Stag Throw Pillow

The stag throw pillow is the first pattern in this collection to be released. I designed it specifically for the Furls Blog Hop 2021. There will also be an afghan in two sizes, a placemat and a buffalo check coffee cozy coming your way soon. I may add to the collection in 2022!

I have designed this one to fit a 20″ pillow form using corner to corner with the half double crochet stitch.

Yarn

Furls were so good to send me an Odyssey hook and the yarn I needed for this project. I love the Odyssey hooks! They did take me a project or two to get the hang of using them because I had to move my hand further back on the handle. But they are now probably my favourite hook to use … and they come in so many pretty colours! I have plans to make another one in cream and beige for my sister and her husband.

I used 4.5 skeins (approx 540 yards) of their Wonder Yarn in obsidian (black) and 2 skeins (240 yards) of red. There have been mixed reviews about this yarn but I have to say I enjoyed working with it! I find using black in my corner to corner projects is fairly easy because of the ridges it creates on each row.

If you want to check out the Wonder Yarn you can do so here.

Odyssey hooks can be found here.

New to Corner to Corner?

That’s ok – we have a mini course that take you through EVERYTHING you need to know and we have a free pattern which I work through with you in the video tutorials too!

You can find more information about it here.

Pattern notes and information:

Before you start there are a few things I need to tell you about.

Materials:

  • #4 weight yarn of your choosing – I used 4.5 skeins of Wander yarn in black, and 2 skeins in red
  • 5mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Using hdc C2C 4 blocks were 2”

  • This is a Corner to Corner pattern worked from the bottom right to the top left.
  • It is a reversible pattern so remember to crochet over any yarn you carry.
  • To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
  • The stitch totals for the front of the pillow are:  Stag – 381 blocks. Background – 915 block
  • For the back of the pillow you can either make another stag or work a solid color. I have given the instructions for a solid color back below.

Assembly

Once you have sewn in your ends, you may find it easier to SC evenly around each square, making sure to work 3SC in each corner.

Step 1:          Take your front and back panels and place wrong sides together (this means that the right sides will be facing outwards).

Step 2:          SC around three sides of your cushion ensuring that you sc through both the front and the back panels.  At each corner (sc, ch1, sc). Do NOT work the last side yet.

Step 3:          Insert pillow form into cushion and then continue to sc along the last side. This might be a little trickier as you have the pillow form to work around too.  Slip stitch to the first stitch you made. Do not fasten off yet!

Step 4:          Crab stitch in each sc and ch1 space around. SS to join. Fasten off and weave in ends.
