4th July Throw Pillow – Free Crochet Along!

4th July Throw Pillow – Free Crochet Along!
Spread the love

The 4th July throw pillow is an idea that Erin from Juniper and Oakes and I had while chatting one evening last week.

The idea took off and we just couldn’t leave it alone! So it became an impromptu CAL. And I think you are going to love it.

What do you think of it?

Erin was a fast worker!

Our chat was late one evening my time. By the time I woke up the next morning Erin had several c2c options for the front and back of the pillow designed.

Of course, I wasn’t going to take one of her designs and pretend that I had come up with the idea! So we discussed and I decided that I would come up with some texture for the back panel. I actually really like playing with texture and love the way that this one turned out.

What is a CAL?

For those of you new to CALs …. A CAL is a Crochet Along. It is the opportunity for you to work on a project at the same time as other people within the crochet community. You get to ask questions and receive help and support, share your WIPs and yarn choices as well as your finished projects.

CALs are great fun and a great way to make new crochet friends along the way too.

My Facebook Community group is really active and VERY supportive of each other. Don’t forget to join the Juniper and Oakes Facebook group too!

I will also be sharing the updates in my Events and CALs email if you would like to join my mailing list.

Don’t want the American Flag on yours?

That’s OK! You could make 2 back panels in your colour(s) of choice instead!

OR

What about making the front panel but continuing the stripes? Or having the blue and the ‘stars’ just as a solid blue section?

Materials needed:

For my version I used the following (although it is dependant upon your tension!)

  • 6mm hook (if you are a loose crocheter you can get away with a 5mm or 5.5 if you are more comfortable with those. You just need to be able to get the front panel to fit a pillow form)
  • #4 weight yarn in 3 colours. I used Paintbox Simply aran:
    • 1 skein of white
    • 1 skein of red
    • 1.25 skeins of blue
  • Tapestry needle
  • scissors
  • blocking mats (optional)
  • pillow form (mine was 16″)

Ready to start the CAL??

This CAL will run between the 28th June and 2nd July. Click the photos for each section as they become available:

The 4th July throw pillow front panel by Juniper and Oakes

This one will go live at 8am London time on Tuesday 28th July 2022.

Erin has designed this one to be as correct as she could within the 25 x 25 corner to corner graph.

It has 12 stripes and 50 ‘stars’.

The 4th July throw pillow back panel by Sunflower Cottage Crochet

This one will be available at 8am London time on Thursday 30th June 2022.

I enjoyed playing with texture for this one. The stitches are easy and you only need a starting chain or foundation row of an odd number so it is very easy to adjust and make it the same size as your front panel!

These will be live on Saturday 2nd July.
