Hugo Bow Tie – free crochet pattern for your dogs!

The Hugo bow tie was designed to be my second pattern in the rescue dog event hosted by Debbie from Madame Stitch.

Have I introduced you to Hugo? He is my 3.5 year old Great Dane. Hugo is not a rescue dog – we got him when he was 9 weeks old. He started to go grey at 19 months! But he is the biggest, softest, most fabulous dog in the world! His noises come from his toes and a lot of people find them quite intimidating, but he really is my big friendly giant!

Challenges of a bow tie

You would think that a bow tie would be a super quick pattern to make wouldn’t you? I didn’t find that to be the case. In fact I almost gave up in frustration. I think I was overthinking the pattern and what I wanted. Then the size did not work out well so I had to make several to find the right yarn and hook size.

 

 

I got there in the end. Although I have to say if I wasn’t so worried about letting Debbie down I may not have.

A great photo prop

Photo props are such valuable things to shelters when they are trying to re-home animals. The animals stand out more and are more memorable if they have some form of prop. Which in turn means that they are more likely to be adopted.

Pattern Info:

Materials:

• About 20 yards of DK (#3 weight) yarn 
• 4mm
• Stitch markers (optional)
• Scissors
• Tapestry needle

Gauge: Not important for this project. You can use any number of stitches to size this pattern up or down

Sizing:

My bow ties are approx. 5” wide by 2” tall

To change the size of your bow tie simply use a different yarn weight with an appropriate sized hook or amend your hook size.

 

 

Abbreviations:

• Ch(s)–chain(s)
• St(s)–stitch(es)
• rep–repeat
• sk—skip
• FSC – foundation single crochet
• DC – double crochet
• SC – single crochet
• YO—yarn over
• FO—fasten off 

Pattern notes:

• Written in US terms.
• Ch2 stitches at the beginning do count as a st unless otherwise stated. CH 1 st does not count.
• The stitch count is in parenthesis at the end of each row.

 

Row 1 –           FSC 17 

OR 

CH 18, SC in second CH from hook and each CH across  (17)

Row 2 –           Turn, CH2, DC in the first st and each st across (17)

 

 

Rows 3 – 10    Rep row 2 

Fold your work in half so that your first and last rows meet. 

SS or SC (whichever you prefer) across to sew the ends together.

At this point you can choose whether to do the same all of the way around your rectangle. I choose to do this so that I got a firmer end to the bows.

FO and weave in ends.

To create the middle band:

Row 1 –           fsc 10 or

                        Ch 11, SC in second CH from hook and each CH across. (10)

                        Note: your first row should be as long as your bow is wide, if it is not adjust 

accordingly as stitch count is not as important as size in this pattern)

 

 

Row 2 –           Turn, CH1, SC in first st and each st across (10)

Rows 3- 4        Rep row 2.

Note: You can repeat row 2 another 2-3 times if you prefer a wider middle band.

Leave a long tail, FO.

Using the long tail sew the short sides of the band together around the rectangle you have already made.

Sew in the ends.

Most dog collars appear to be between 5/8″ and 1″ wide. Attach a piece of elastic that is approx 1.5-2” long to the back of the bow with a needle and thread. 

 And Voila – your bowtie is done!
