Free Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern – Brighten Your Home with a Sunflower

Looking to bring some rustic charm and cheerful energy into your home? This free crochet wall hanging pattern is just the thing to brighten any space with handmade sunshine. Featuring a bold sunflower design and beautiful textured stripes, this farmhouse-inspired piece is perfect for adding warmth and personality to your decor.
Whether you hang it in your kitchen, hallway, guest bedroom, nursery, or even a school classroom, this sunflower wall hanging makes a joyful statement. It works for any season, any age, and any style of home!

Construction of the Design
This free crochet wall hanging pattern is made in two parts:
Part 1: Corner to Corner Sunflower Square
We begin with a corner to corner (C2C) chart featuring a 25 x 25 square sunflower design. You can use the standard double crochet C2C method, or opt for a more compact version using mini C2C with half double crochets. Once the square is complete, an edging is worked around it to create a clean border for the next section.
Part 2: Textured Striped Section
Next, we add interest and dimension with rows of staggered double crochet pairs at the bottom of the piece. Don’t let the name scare you – this stitch technique is simpler than it sounds and adds gorgeous texture and weight to the overall design. It’s the perfect contrast to the pixel-style sunflower above.
Inspiration Behind the Free Crochet Wall Hanging
This wall hanging was originally designed for the Wall Hanging Happiness Blog Hop 2025, hosted by SandraStitches. I only had one wall hanging in my pattern catalogue, so this was a great excuse to design another!
Coming up with the idea, however, wasn’t so simple. I went back and forth until I landed on something that felt just right– a sunflower! Naturally, Sunflower Cottage Crochet had to include a sunflower in the lineup, right? Plus, I already had a sunflower corner to corner chart, and with the deadline looming, it was a smart and speedy decision.
This pattern is also a great example of how you can repurpose existing C2C squares into new projects. If you love this idea, check out the many free corner to corner square patterns available on my blog – they can all be turned into beautiful wall hangings like this one! Why not create a set for a classroom or nursery wall?

Stitches Used in This Free Crochet Wall Hanging
To complete this pattern, you’ll need to know:
- How to work corner to corner crochet (either full-size or mini C2C)
- How to crochet staggered double crochet pairs
If you’re new to either of these, don’t worry! I’ve got full support for you:
- My Learn to Corner to Corner Course walks you through the C2C technique in detail.
- I offer video tutorials for both left- and right-handed crocheters, including how to:
- Work C2C – see the link above for all of the videos here.
- Make staggered double crochet pairs with my tutorial that includes photos and videos.
- Add a dowel rod to hang your finished project-
Sizing
This free crochet wall hanging pattern is completely adjustable to fit your space:
- I used #4 weight yarn and a 5mm hook for mine.
- Choose your own yarn weight and a compatible hook to customize the finished size.
- Use thread yarn for a mini version (great for a fridge magnet!) or go bulky for a statement piece.
- Want a smaller sunflower square? Use mini C2C with half double crochets. For a larger piece, stick with standard double crochet stitches.
You could even adapt the sunflower portion as a tapestry crochet or intarsia project if that’s more your style.
Yarn Used
I used Paintbox Simply Aran for this project. It’s one of my favourite go-to yarns, and here’s why:
- It comes in a huge variety of bright, rich colours
- It’s soft, easy to work with, and holds up well to washing
- I rarely run into knots or splitting
Paintbox Simply Aran is a true workhorse yarn and looks fantastic in wall hangings like this one.

Note: this pattern is written so that you can make it any size with a variety of techniques and use whatever size yarn and appropriate hook takes your fancy! I have given written and colour block instructions for corner to corner but you have the chart to work from for a different technique (intarsia, tapestry, single crochets. Equally, you can choose to use either double crochet or half double crochet for your corner to corner section.
Abbreviations used:
- Ch(s) – chain(s)
- St(s) – stitch(es)
- YO – yarn over
- Sc – single crochet
- hdc – half double crochet
- SDCP – staggered double crochet pairs
- SS – slip stitch
- FO – fasten off
Pattern Notes:
- Written in US terms.
- Ch stitches at the beginning do not count as a st unless otherwise stated.
- The stitch multiple is 2 for the bottom edging
- Pattern is written for #4 weight yarn but you can play around with your yarn and hooks to get any size you need for this one!
- The first part of this pattern is for the corner to corner pattern. You will find the written instructions for this first. If you are new to corner to corner I have a Learn to Corner to Corner Mini Course at https://sunflowercottagecrochet.com/learn-to-corner-to-corner/
- When working Part 1 (the corner to corner section) the arrows indicate which way the row is worked according to the graph – left to right or right to left (this is the same with the arrows in the color block instructions!)
- Part 1 is corner to corner and is worked bottom right to top left on the right side.
- To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch with the stitch you intend to use (HDC or DC) and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
Stitch totals for part 1 are:
Colour | No of Sts |
White | 282 |
Yellow | 173 |
Orange | 109 |
Brown | 61 |
Special stitches:
DC2TOG: Also known as a decrease, YO, insert hook into indicated stitch and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops only, YO, insert hook into next st and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops, YO and pull through all remaining loops on the hook.
SDCP: *This is the same as the DC2Tog stitch but you only work into the CH1 spaces from row 2.
Double crocheting 2 together by placing first leg of the decrease in the previous stitch worked and second leg of the stitch in the next ch1 space and chain 1 are what make the Staggered Double Crochet Pairs stitch. The video linked above helps to explain how to do it very well and I chose to include the full instructions in the pattern for clarification as well.
I have a SDCP st washcloth pattern video tutorial that shows you how to work this stitch from row 2:

At this point I recommend preparing your corner to corner square for borders. I have a blog post on how to do this at https://sunflowercottagecrochet.com/how-to-prepare-your-corner-to-corner-projects-for-joining-and-borders/
The Preparation:
You can find my blog post tutorial for this here.
**If you prefer video tutorials you can find my right handed version at https://youtu.be/7hLCZ6i6eeM and the left handed version at https://youtu.be/pxU37LP-r5c
If you worked a HDC c2c block: With this part you are going to be SC into the spaces between the C2C blocks and chaining 2.
If you worked a DC c2c block: You will substitute each CH2 for a CH3.
Part 2: The Striped bottom section
Now we will be working the coloured rows of SDCP sts under our sunflower.
Note: You will now be working in rows to add height to your wall hanging. You may add as many rows as you wish and in any colour combination.
Attach your white yarn to any corner.
With a 4mm hook ….
Note: for this section refer to the figure photos under the special stitches.
Row 1: SC an even number of stitch along one side of your sunflower.
Row 2: In Brown CH3 (counts as a dc, ch1), *DC2Tog across next 2 sts, Ch1. * Rep from * to * across, dc in last st.
Row 3: In white Ch3, turn, DC2Tog across 1st and 2nd Ch1 spaces, Ch1, *DC2Tog by inserting your hook into the same stitch as the last leg of the previous stitch you just did and the next Ch1 space, Ch1* Rep from * to * ensuring that you place the last leg of the final stitch under the ch3 from previous row, DC in top of ch3.
Row 3: In yellow, Rep row 3
Row 4: In white, Rep row 3
Row 5: In orange, Rep row 3
Row 6: In white, Rep row 3
Row 7: In yellow, Rep row 3
Row 8: In white, Rep row 3
Row 9: In brown, Rep row 3
Row 10: In white, Rep row 3
Do not FO.
Edging your wall hanging:
In white, Ch1, turn, Sc in first st and each st across the bottom of your wall hanging until you have 1 st remaining, [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st.
Turn your work so you are working up the side of your wall hanging, Sc evenly (for me this was 2 sts in each ch2 sp) up the side of your wall hanging until you have 1 st remaining, [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st.
Turn your work so that you are working along the top of your project,, Sc in second st and each st across the top of your wall hanging until you have 1 st remaining, [2sc, ch1, 2sc] in last st.
Turn your work so you are working down the side of your wall hanging, Sc evenly (for me this was 2 sts in each ch2 sp) down the side of your wall hanging until you have 1 st remaining, [2sc, ch1, sc] in last st. SS to top of first sc to join.
FO and weave in ends.
I would recommend that you block your wall hanging if required at this point, before attaching the dowl.
Attaching your dowel:
There are 2 options here.
Option 1:
Chain 65, skip all of the stitches in the row and slip stitch to the last stitch of the row
OR
Option 2:
Single crochet over a length of 6mm dowl cut to approx. 2” longer than your wall hanging.
I have video tutorials on how to do this
Right handed video tutorial – https://youtu.be/UWNahHENBUM
Left handed video tutorial – https://youtu.be/5JkVmqt8E6o
FO ad weave in ends.
