The projects may be small, but the love, care and thought that go into every stitch certainly aren’t.

Welcome to the 2026 Preemie Crochet Challenge!

From 1st–30th September 2026, I am once again joining forces with some fabulous crochet designers to bring you 30 crochet patterns for preemie babies.

And there’s an extra reason to get those hooks ready…

During the challenge, a different pattern will be featured each day with a coupon code that allows you to download the PDF pattern for free.

In return, I ask you to make a simple pledge:

For every free PDF pattern you download during the challenge, please make at least one item from that pattern to donate.

It could go to your local NICU or neonatal unit, a premature baby charity, a local organisation collecting handmade items, or perhaps directly to a family who could use a little extra love and support.

You don’t have to make everything during September.

There is no frantic race to produce 30 finished projects before the month is over!

Download the patterns you genuinely intend to use, add them to your crochet queue, and make your donations when you can.

Because this challenge isn’t about how quickly we can crochet.

It’s about what we can achieve together.

Why Crochet for Preemie Babies?

Premature babies often arrive before their families have had time to prepare for them.

And when everything suddenly becomes about hospitals, monitors, feeding, weight gain and getting through the next few hours or days, something as simple as finding clothing that actually fits a tiny baby can become surprisingly difficult.

This is something I understand personally.

My daughter, Jorja, arrived early. I remember how difficult it was to find clothes and even nappies small enough for her. Newborn clothes absolutely drowned her.

Our experience is one of the reasons the Preemie Crochet Challenge has remained so close to my heart.

Of course, a crocheted hat or blanket can’t change the medical journey a premature baby and their family are facing.

But it can provide warmth.

It can be useful.

It can give a parent something beautiful that was made especially for a baby their size.

And sometimes it can simply be a little reminder that somebody, somewhere, cared enough to sit down with their yarn and hook and make something for them.

That matters.

The 2026 Preemie Crochet Challenge

The challenge runs from 1st September through 30th September 2026.

Every day I will feature a different crochet pattern suitable for premature babies.

You’ll find a lovely mixture of projects throughout the month, so whether you enjoy making quick little projects or prefer something you can settle down with for a few evenings, there should be plenty here to inspire you.

The aim is simple:

Download it. Make it. Donate it.

By the end of September, imagine how many handmade items our crochet community could have created for premature babies and their families!

One crocheter making one item may not feel like a huge thing.

But hundreds—or thousands—of crocheters doing the same thing?

That’s where things get exciting.

How Do the Free Preemie Crochet Patterns Work?

Each day during the challenge, one pattern will become the Today’s Featured Pattern.

The designer will provide a coupon code which allows you to download the PDF version of their pattern for free for the stated promotional period.

Please pay attention to the dates and times given with each featured pattern.

The patterns are only guaranteed to be available as free PDF downloads while their individual coupon codes are active.

Some designers may choose to keep their PDF available free for a little longer, but please don’t assume that a previous day’s code will still work.

The good news is that many of the patterns featured in this challenge will continue to be available to view free on the designer’s website after their PDF promotion has finished.

So, if you arrive late to the challenge—or perhaps you’ve discovered this roundup long after September 2026—there should still be lots of wonderful preemie crochet patterns for you to explore.

How to Take Part

Taking part couldn’t be easier.

1. Visit this post each day between 1st and 30th September.
2. Find the pattern under Today’s Featured Pattern.
3. Follow the link to the designer’s website and read their post.
4. Find the special challenge button or instructions to get the PDF.
5. Use the coupon code provided to download the pattern while the promotion is active.
6. Pledge to make at least one item from every free pattern you download and donate it.

You don’t have to download every pattern.

Before You Crochet: Please Check Where You Plan to Donate

This bit is important.

Before making a pile of gorgeous tiny hats, blankets or other preemie items, check the requirements of the organisation you intend to donate them to.

Different hospitals, NICUs and charities can have very different rules about what they will accept.

They may specify things such as:

• particular yarn fibres
• colours that can or cannot be used
• minimum or maximum sizes
• whether certain items are currently needed
• washing requirements
• pet-free or smoke-free environments
• how donations should be packaged
• whether embellishments, buttons or other additions are permitted

Please don’t assume that because one NICU accepts something, another one will too.

A quick check before you begin means your lovely crochet work has the best possible chance of reaching a baby or family who can use it.

Choosing Yarn for Crochet Patterns for Preemie Babies

When crocheting for premature babies, yarn choice matters.

We’re making for delicate little people, so this isn’t necessarily the time to reach blindly into the deepest, darkest corner of the stash and use whatever comes out first!

Look for yarn that is soft, comfortable and easy to care for, while always following the requirements of the organisation receiving your donation.

Washability can be particularly important for items being donated to hospitals and families with newborn babies.

Avoid anything excessively fluffy or scratchy, and think carefully about the finished texture as well as how pretty the yarn looks in the skein.

Choosing the Best Yarns for Baby Crochet Projects

Small Crochet Projects Can Make a Big Difference

One of my favourite things about the Preemie Crochet Challenge is that you don’t necessarily need huge amounts of yarn—or time—to take part.

Preemie projects are naturally smaller.

That makes many of them fantastic projects for using yarn already sitting in your stash.

They’re also ideal when you only have a little crochet time available.

A tiny hat might fit into an evening’s crochet. A pair of bonding squares can be a wonderfully meaningful way to use a small amount of yarn. Even a preemie blanket is considerably more manageable than its full-sized cousin.

So please don’t look at this challenge and think:

“I don’t have time to make enough to make a difference.”

You don’t need to make enough.

Make one.

One hat.

One blanket.

One pair of bonding squares.

One little outfit.

One handmade gift that wasn’t there before.

That’s already something worth doing.

What Are Preemie Bonding Squares?

If you’ve followed previous Preemie Crochet Challenges, you’ll probably already know that I have a particular soft spot for bonding squares.

If they’re new to you, they’re small crochet squares generally made in matching pairs.

One square can be kept close to a parent so that it picks up their scent, while the other stays close to their baby. The squares can then be swapped, helping to maintain that familiar connection when cuddles and skin-to-skin contact may be limited.

They’re tiny projects, use very little yarn and can be incredibly meaningful.

Always check whether your chosen hospital or NICU currently accepts bonding squares before donating them.

What size should a crochet preemie blanket be?

There isn’t one standard size for a preemie blanket because premature babies can vary enormously in size and different hospitals and charities have their own requirements.

Before choosing your pattern or starting your blanket, check the guidelines provided by the hospital, NICU or charity you intend to donate to.

This is particularly important with very small blankets. Hospitals may have specific requirements depending on how and where the blanket will be used.

What is the best yarn for crochet projects for premature babies?

When crocheting for premature babies, choose a yarn that is soft, gentle against delicate skin and easy to care for.

Avoid yarns that are scratchy or excessively fluffy, and always check the requirements of the hospital or charity receiving your finished item. Some organisations specify particular fibres or yarn types, so it’s much better to check before you start than discover afterwards that your beautiful finished project cannot be accepted.

Can I use acrylic yarn for preemie crochet patterns?

Possibly, but check with the organisation receiving your donation first.

Many baby yarns are made from easy-care acrylic fibres, but individual hospitals and charities can have their own rules about which fibres they accept.

If you’re making for a particular family rather than donating through an organisation, consider softness, washability and the care instructions for the finished item when choosing your yarn.

Can I donate crochet items to my local NICU?

Some NICUs accept handmade donations, but never assume that your local unit will accept everything you make.

Hospitals can have very specific requirements about the types of handmade items they accept, as well as their sizes, fibres, colours, construction and washing or packaging requirements.

Contact the hospital or check its current donation guidelines before you begin.

If your local NICU isn’t currently accepting handmade items, don’t be discouraged. Look for premature baby charities and other organisations that coordinate donations and can tell you exactly what they need.

What are crochet bonding squares?

Bonding squares are small crochet squares usually made in matching pairs. They may be used to help a premature baby become familiar with their parent’s scent when they cannot spend as much time being held as they otherwise might.

One square can be kept close to the parent while the other stays with the baby before the two are swapped.

Not every hospital uses or accepts bonding squares, so always check before making them for donation.

Are crochet preemie hats safe?

Crochet preemie hats can be accepted by some hospitals and charities, but the requirements for premature babies can be different from those for full-term newborns.

Always follow the sizing, yarn and construction guidelines provided by the organisation you’re making for.

Pay particular attention to embellishments. Avoid adding buttons, beads or other decorative elements unless the organisation specifically confirms that they are permitted.

Do I have to make all 30 patterns in the Preemie Crochet Challenge?

Absolutely not!

The aim of the Preemie Crochet Challenge is to encourage us to use our crochet skills to do something positive—not to leave you surrounded by 17 balls of yarn, four cold cups of coffee and a slightly alarming September to-do list.

Choose the patterns you genuinely want to make.

The only thing I ask is that for every free PDF you download as part of the challenge, you pledge to make at least one item from that pattern to donate.

One handmade donation is worthwhile. Five are wonderful. Thirty would be amazing!
