The Preemie Crochet Challenge 2024: Patterns perfect for Premature Babies

The Preemie Crochet Challenge 2024: Patterns perfect for Premature Babies
Spread the love

I am thrilled to welcome you to this year’s Preemie Crochet Challenge – an event dedicated to providing patterns for premature babies. This year marks our fifth year of coming together to create beautiful, handmade items for the tiniest fighters among us. As many of you know, preemie crochet holds a special place in my heart, and I am endlessly inspired by the generosity and talent within our community.

Jorja was my premature baby. You can see from the photo that she had to be tube fed. She inspired my desire to come up with patterns for premature babies.
My Jorja at a few days old

You can read why this crochet challenge is so important to me here.

Throughout the month of June, myself and some amazing crochet designer friends, are offering a selection of exclusive, FREE PDF patterns designed specifically for premature babies. These patterns are crafted with care, ensuring they are perfect for the delicate needs of little ones in NICUs.

Your Pledge:

The challenge is simple yet impactful: in return for each free pattern you download, I ask that you pledge to crochet at least one item from the pattern and donate it to a local NICU, charity, or family in need.

Our goal is to bring warmth, comfort, and a touch of handmade love to premature babies and their families. Over the past five years, we have collectively created thousands of items, from tiny hats and blankets to adorable booties and mittens, all of which have made a significant difference in the lives of those who receive them.

Join me in celebrating this milestone year of the Preemie Crochet Challenge.

Let’s make June a month of creativity, compassion, and community. Your participation not only spreads joy but also showcases the incredible power of our crochet community to make a real difference. Happy crocheting, and thank you for your continued support and generosity!

Choosing your yarn

I have recently published a blog post about choosing the best yarns for baby projects. Please do have a read and make sure that any items or patterns for premature babies that you are planning on making and donating are made in a suitable yarn that can be used. It would be such a shame to pour your time and love into making items for preemie babies for the yarn to be unsuitable.

HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT BONDING SQUARES?

Every year I like to tell you a little bit about what these small but mighty bonding squares are. And this year I have a free printable for you to download so that you can attach them to your bonding squares before you donate them. You will be surprised just how fantastic these special preemie baby crochet patterns can be!

I find bonding square to be quick and easy! They are made in pairs and are usually between 5″ and 7″ squares. When a baby can’t be held by mum, bonding squares help to create a connection between them. Mum wears one of them against her skin for a few hours. Her scent is transferred to the square. The square is then given to baby and mum gets the other square to repeat the process. Through this, the baby learns their mum’s scent and a bond between them is created. This is also a great way for mum to feel closer to her baby. And it gives her something practical to do when she cannot hold her baby. The Bonding Squares you crochet could help a mother and newborn through their loneliest points.

Once you have made a pair of bonding squares to donate, you can turn the bonding square into a washcloth! Simply use 4 weight (aran) yarn and a 5mm hook if the pattern called for 3 weight (DK) yarn and 4mm hook. I did this with one of my patterns this year and it turned out great! Alternatively, you can use your scraps and double strand your yarn. I have a post with a free printable to help you double strand your yarn here.

  • Thank you for this blog hop, they are a lot of work behind the scene to pull one of. I appreciate the free patterns we can be offered. Today is June 2 and the Baby’s Breath Beanie by Kirsten Holloway Designs is just adorable.
    Thank you so much.

  • Hello,
I’ve tried to download the Babysbreath beanie using the link & code for free PDF download and it does not seem to work and still a charge. Wondered if I may be doing something wrong?
Thanks for the help, and having this awesome blog hop!

    • Hi Ginny,

It appears to still be working my end. I would suggest looking for the yellow button on Kirsten’s post. If you click on that she has the coupon code already entered for you and it should come up as free. It could be that there is a pesky space hidden at the beginning or end when you enter the code, or more likely, that ravelry has logged you out at the point of entering the code. Ravelry likes to randomly log people out especially when using an external direct link. Let me know if you continue to have issues (helen@sunflowercottagecrochet.com)

      Helen

    • Hi Ruth,

I have just double checked it and the code is still working. When using an external link Ravelry does like to randomly sign people out. At the point of entering the code please double check that you are signed in as guests cannot use the codes. Also, if that does not work double check that there are no hidden spaces before or after the code – they are difficult to see but Ravelry counts them 🙂 Let me know if you continue to have issues.

    • Hi Sharon, which hat are you referring to please?

If you click the photo of the pattern you are looking for (noting any coupon code if needed) and then scroll the designers post you will see a special event button. Click that to be taken to the page with the download 🙂

  • Hi, I make preemie Blankets for one facility but I’m wondering is there a list somewhere of facilities that accept preemie Blankets? Thanks

    • Hi Linda,

I don’t have a list – you will need to get in touch with the facilities near you. This is a worldwide event so it would be impossible for me to collate that resource unfortunately.

      Helen

  • Is anyone else having trouble finding the patterns on Ravelry other days they are supposed to be there? This is the second time I have had a problem where I went to Ravelry to download the pattern and couldn’t because there was no way to buy it. The first one was for the my little lamb lovey by Wheat State Wool Co. And the send was the Amberley Premie Crochet blanket by Simply Melanie Jane. They both have it state on the Challenge home page under their post that the pdf ID able the be downloaded until June 30. Melanie Jane then contradicts that by saying in the linking post that only on June 19th can you download hers. Either way I was at both Ravelry sites on the date they were released and could not get either one of them. Could someone help with this I would really like to make these items for my NICU that I support. Thank you so very much for all that you all do!

    • Hi Kimberly,
I have just checked both of those patterns and the coupon code is still working for them. What usually happens is that Ravelry likes to sign people out randomly, especially when using a direct link to a listing. At the point of inputting the coupon code please double check that you are signed into Ravelry, even if you are usually signed in automatically. Unfortunately guests (i.e. those not signed into an account) cannot download even a free pdf pattern now.
The other thing to check is that that there are no sneaky spaces hidden at the beginning or end of the coupon code you are inputting. Obviously these are invisible to the eye but do catch some people out.
Let me know if you continue to have issues after checking these things for me 🙂
      Helen

  • This is what I get when I go to each and every one of those Ravelry sites including the Dino hat one now.

    • Ok. That’s the pattern page. You need to click but now on the right hand side then on the next screen click use coupon code (it’s right next to the total). The codes will work in that box and reduce the patterns to 0.00
