The Book Square – Free C2C Pattern

The Book Square – Free C2C Pattern
Spread the love

September 8th 2022 is International Literacy Day (ILD). This is different to World Book Day which was held in March. But the book square will work perfectly to celebrate both days. It would look fabulous as a wall hanging in a library or reading corner!

ILD was first celebrated on September 8th 1966. Being able to read and write is empowering for both individuals and communities. Literacy levels within a community or country can determine poverty levels, equality (on all levels), even infant mortality rates. And of course, with world wide lockdown in 2020 this is particularly poignant for students across the world.

What can you do during International Literacy Day this year? Why not donate some old books to a local school, library or community centre? Or buy a book as a gift for someone?

Inspiration behind the design

Construction of the design

This square is part of the Kinship CAL. It is a corner to corner block which is 25 x 25 blocks in size. I created mine using the half double crochet method rather than double crochet, but you can use either depending on the size you are after creating.

PART OF THE KINSHIP CAL 2022

Throughout 2022 I am releasing one square a month. The theme is international days and holidays that are not political or religiously motivated. This is why I named it the Kinship CAL – everyone can join in and just have fun with it.

The book square is for September’s International Literacy Day. If you want to check out the other squares so far you can visit my round up post here.

There is also the opportunity to purchase the e-book which contains all 13 (yes, there is one extra in there for November for the adults)for only £6.50! If this is your preference just click the button below

NEW TO CORNER TO CORNER?

I have a learn to corner to corner course . It has helped a lot of crocheters to master corner to corner. Together we look at reading the patterns, how to do the stitch, increases and decreases and colour changes. I will show you how to work both squares and rectangles too. We even make a couple of free pattern projects together!

The Yarn

When I set out to create the Kinship Afghan I did so with the intention of only using my stash and scraps. I managed to do this with my collection of Caron simply soft from other projects. As long as you use the same weight yarn throughout this project is a great one for using those part skeins you have been saving rather than throwing them away.

The Book Square pattern specifics:

Materials:

4 weight (aran) yarn of your choosing in 10 colours – I used Caron Simply Soft
Stitch markers (optional)
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Does not matter as long as tension is consistent.

Sizing:

Finished size once blocked is approximately 12” square depending on tension if using HDC

Abbreviations used:

·      Ch(s) – chain(s)
·      St(s) – stitch(es)
·      The arrows indicate which way the row is worked according to the graph – left to right or right to left (this is the same with the arrows in the color block instructions!)

Other notes:

– Written in US terms.
– Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
– There are no special stitches used in this pattern.

– This is corner to corner graph and is worked bottom right to top left on the right side.

To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch with the stitch you intend to use (HDC or DC) and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
Color charts with stitch totals are listed under the picture graph on the next page.
