Hi, I’m Helen!

I’m the crochet designer, blogger and slightly yarn-obsessed person behind Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

I’m also a wife, mum to a wonderfully sassy teenager, and someone who firmly believes that crochet should be enjoyable – not something that leaves you glaring at your yarn and wondering where it all went wrong!

I started crocheting when I was 14, and rather unusually, I used it to help me revise for exams.

I would sit making granny square after granny square while repeating dates, facts and events to myself. Keeping my hands busy somehow helped my brain concentrate.

Lots of crocheters tell me that crochet quietens their thoughts. For me, it has always done almost the opposite – crochet helps me think.

I have planned patterns, worked through problems, written imaginary to-do lists and had some quite spectacular arguments with myself while crocheting over the years!

Thankfully, I usually win those arguments.

How Sunflower Cottage Crochet Began

I didn’t actually set out to become a crochet designer.

My first design, the Mixed Toffee Cowl, came about because another designer asked me to create something to help with an event in her Facebook group.

As it happened, the pattern wasn’t needed after all.

But I had designed it.

And I loved it.

That little cowl helped set me on a completely different path, and Sunflower Cottage Crochet grew from there.

Today, I design crochet patterns, write tutorials and create videos to help crocheters build their skills and – most importantly – feel confident enough to try something new.

Crochet Should Help You Grow Your Skills

This is really at the heart of everything I do at Sunflower Cottage Crochet.

I love a beautiful finished project, of course. But I also love patterns that teach you something along the way.

Maybe it’s your first cable.

Your first garment.

Your first mosaic crochet project.

Perhaps you’ve never decreased a stitch before, worked in the round or followed a slightly more adventurous stitch combination.

My patterns and tutorials are designed to help you take that next little step without feeling as though you’ve suddenly been thrown in at the deep end.

You’ll find plenty of beginner-friendly projects here, but you’ll also find patterns that gently encourage you to stretch your skills.

And when a technique needs a little extra explanation, I try to provide that too – with clear written instructions, tutorials and both right- and left-handed video support wherever I can.

Because being left-handed certainly shouldn’t mean trying to mentally flip somebody else’s hands around while learning a new crochet technique!

I particularly love designs that make wonderful gifts and donation projects. There is something very special about turning a ball of yarn into something that can bring another person a little comfort.
