Growing Carrots – Free C2C Crochet Pattern

Growing Carrots – Free C2C Crochet Pattern

Want to crochet your own carrots corner to corner square?

Growing Carrots was something that my Grandad used to do (although I remember the leeks much more than the carrots). He would grow them in his allotment and then enter local shows. As children I have fond memories of my mum taking us to support him. We would get dressed up and wonder up and down rows of tables looking for the produce that had my grandad’s name on it! Just thinking about it I can still smell the hall – the earthy smell mixed with the onions and leeks. And Grandad’s beaming face when we ooh-ed and ahh-ed and declared his to be the best regardless of what the judges said. Great memories!

My mum also likes to grow her own vegetables and has a lot of success. I think my grandad would have been proud of her efforts!

Inspiration behind the design

The Carrots Square was designed specifically for the Community Garden Blanket CAL. In the UK allotments are very similar to the community gardens that they have in the US.

One of the easiest vegetables to grow are carrots. Most people like them. So I picked these as my inspiration for this square (the leek was already taken lol).

Construction of the carrots corner to corner square

This square uses the corner to corner method. I used the HDC version in mine, but you can use the DC if you prefer your squares to be bigger!

NEW TO CORNER TO CORNER?

I have a learn to corner to corner course . It has helped a lot of crocheters to master corner to corner. Together we look at reading the patterns, how to do the stitch, increases and decreases and colour changes. I will show you how to work both squares and rectangles too. We even make a couple of free pattern projects together!

The Yarn

The great things about corner to corner patterns is that you can literally use any weight yarn and appropriate sized hook! Of course, the smaller the yarn and hook, the smaller the square will be.

For my version I used #4 weight Paintbox Simply Aran yarn and a 5mm hook. It would look equally fabulous in #3 weight yarn and a 4mm hook!

Materials:

#4 weight Paintbox Simply Aran yarn in cream / off white, orange, brown and green
5mm hook
Stitch markers (optional)
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Gauge:

For corner to corner blanket projects, gauge is not necessarily important, but you can adjust to specific requirements. As long as your tension is consistent gauge does not matter for this project.

Sizing:

The pattern is 25 x 25 blocks. In HDC mine came to 13″ square using HDC. If using DC this would have been 17-18″ square.

Other notes for the carrots corner to corner square:

– Written in US terms.
– Colours used: White (w) 391, Dark Brown (DB) 26, Green (g) 86, Orange (o) 122
