The Calligraphy Square – Free Crochet Pattern

The Calligraphy Square – Free Crochet Pattern
Spread the love

I love the way that this calligraphy square turned out. The subtle colour combo I used to make it is also calling to me. I am not going to lie though — the design process was a little bit trickier! Getting those pretty flicks and swirls to look somewhat like what I had in my head was a challenge!

World Calligraphy Day

World Calligraphy Day is celebrated on 10th August 2022 to celebrate the impact that calligraphy has had on cultures and civilisations throughout history. Examples are the Chinese, Ancient Egyptians, and Latin!

Can you write in calligraphy? I can’t, but I wish I could. My Step Father does! It is so beautiful.

When I think of calligraphy I think of the Lindisfarne Gospels and other beautiful manuscripts. What about you?

Yarn Used:

I was determined that this CAL would be designed specifically to use my stash and part used skeins of yarn. I managed it! The whole thing was designed and made with yarn that I already had.

The Calligraphy Square was made using Caron Simply Soft. I believe I used colourways bone and sage for mine.

I have heard a lot of things said about Caron simply soft but I have to say that I do enjoy working with it. It doesn’t split for me except for when it is old scraps of yarn that have been wound into little scrap balls. But even then only occasionally. And I haven’t found that it has too many knots in it where the yarn snapped during manufacture.

I can think of at least 25 items (mostly blankets) I have made with Caron Simply Soft and I would definitely use it again!

You will also need a 5mm hook.

PART OF THE KINSHIP CAL 2022

Throughout 2022 I am releasing one square a month. The theme is international days and holidays that are not political or religiously motivated. This is why I named it the Kinship CAL – everyone can join in and just have fun with it.

The Calligraphy Square is for August. If you want to check out the other squares so far you can visit my round up post here.

NEW TO CORNER TO CORNER?

I have a learn to corner to corner course . It has helped a lot of crocheters to master corner to corner. Together we look at reading the patterns, how to do the stitch, increases and decreases and colour changes. I will show you how to work both squares and rectangles too. We even make a couple of free pattern projects together!

Pattern Specifics:

Sizing: Finished size once blocked is approximately 12” square depending on tension if using HDC

Notes:

This is corner to corner graph and is worked bottom right to top left on the right side.

To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch with the stitch. Use the stitch you intend to use (HDC or DC). Then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color. Add some for the tails to be worked in at the end.

Color charts with stitch totals are listed under the picture graph.
