The Lacy Hair Scarf was actually the first hair scarf pattern that I designed! Even before the Elegant Hair Scarf (also a free pattern). My hair scarves are inspired by those glamourous silver screen icons. The carefree car rides over the mountains or along the …
I am just so excited about this design, the Sarah Tee! And I am super proud of it.
I named this one the Sarah tee after my sister Sarah. It was designed and made specifically for her. Sarah is only a year younger than me so we know each other pretty well. Sarah is actually modelling it in the promotional photos.
When I sat down to decide on the stitches I was going to use and the style I wanted it took me maybe 20 minutes in total. I mulled it over for a couple of hours while I got on with chores and then sat down to create it. It worked up in no time without incident. There was no hair pulling, no hideous maths to figure out and before I knew it I had the Sarah Tee.
The bottom of the Sarah Tee uses a fabulous stitch combo that allows for subtle texture. And just check out the lacy texture on the top of this one.
I think I managed to get just the right balance when I designed this one!
The lacy section at the top was designed to sit just at the top of your bust. Designing it this way helps with the modesty element (you do not need to wear a vest top under this one) and also gave me just the perfect amount of space to really show off the gorgeous texture and make this top perfect for those warmer days. The tiny bit of shaping around the shoulders and voila! I have accommodated for a boatneck version in the pattern too if you don’t like shaping for shoulders.

I’m classing this one as my first garment design
You all know that I designed our cocoon cardigans, yes? I know they are a garment but for me they were designed as an introduction to garment design. I have had a few garment ideas in my head for a while, but needed the courage to get them started. The cocoon cardigans allowed me to flex my muscles with a simple design that gave me practice at understanding and reading sizing charts. So you see for me, despite how much I do genuinely love them and are proud of them, they were the gateway to other things.
What is not to love about this?
Back to the Sarah Tee:
The yarn for this one was generously provided by WeCrochet as part of the Designer Summer Picks Event in June 2021.
I used cotlin yarn in conch and swan white for this particular version. This yarn is Knit Picks own brand. I chose the cotlin because it was a dk (#3) weight and I loved the idea of using a cotton/linen mix for a summer garment. The cotton content will help it keep it shape and the linen content makes this one even more breathable and cool on those warmer days. Bonus …you can tumble dry it on a low setting too!

All of the patterns I have in the works or in my head will be size inclusive. Some of them I will go back and regrade for children’s sizes too once the adult sizes have been released, but I will let you know when I get to that.
This pattern is written in 9 sizes from adult extra small to 5XL so it will fit up to a 62″ bust! (See sizing chart below)
There is 2″ of ease in this design so it is a closer more classic fit but there is still room to move in it.
I have kept the construction simple. This design is made up of 2 identical panels sewn together.
Testers loved the Sarah Tee!
I was so lucky that I had a bunch of fantastic ladies helping me to test this one! They did a fantastic job and, I think, loved making this one as much I did. Michele is currently making her third or fourth Sarah tee! You know if testers want to make it again and again it has to be a great pattern….
