Misty Days Blanket – Free Crochet Blanket Pattern in 9 Sizes (Preemie to King)

If you’ve been hunting for the ultimate crochet blanket pattern that works for absolutely everyone—babies, toddlers, teens, adults, and even those who insist on king-sized coziness—then let me introduce you to the Misty Days Blanket.
This design is written in nine sizes, from tiny preemie blankets all the way up to full king-sized bedspreads. It’s unisex, modern, and ridiculously versatile. Plus, it’s beginner-friendly because it uses only basic crochet stitches to create all that scrumptious texture and a standout border that makes it look far fancier than it is.
Whether you’re crocheting for a baby shower, a handmade heirloom, or just a Netflix-and-stitch snuggle project, this blanket has you covered (literally).
About the Design
The Misty Days Blanket is worked in simple rows, with the border added at the end. The main body is soft and textured without holes—perfect for little ones who love to poke their fingers through gaps in crochet fabric. The border comes in two variations:
- Smaller sizes (preemie to receiving): The border is worked on just three sides, so there’s no chance of tiny fingers getting caught.
- Larger sizes (throw to king): You can go for the full, all-around border treatment for a polished, framed look.
It’s a design that looks complex but is truly straightforward, making it perfect for beginners who have an understanding of how to work the basic stitches, and relaxing for experienced crocheters.

Why “Misty Days”?
This blanket is part of my growing Misty Days Collection, a cozy family of designs that all use the same stitch combinations to create beautifully textured pieces. So far, the collection includes the Misty Days Sweater (which my sister claimed the moment she tried it on—siblings, right?) and the Misty Days Poncho.
The blanket idea struck me when I was moving my office into a bigger room and came across my old poncho samples. I fell in love with the stitches all over again and immediately thought: this texture belongs on a blanket. And since blankets are the most unisex project out there, everyone gets to enjoy it.
Stitches Used
No fancy business here—just slip stitches, chains, half double crochet, and double crochet. That’s it. With these stitches, you’ll get:
- A warm, textured main body.
- A tidy, modern border.
- A project that’s easy enough for beginners but interesting enough that you won’t nod off mid-row.
Sizing
The Misty Days Blanket is written in 9 sizes, so you can make exactly what you need:
- Preemie
- Security
- Crib
- Baby
- Receiving
- Throw
- Double
- Queen
- King
So whether you’re donating to the Preemie Crochet Challenge (more on that below 👇) or making a king-sized masterpiece, there’s a size for you.
Yarn + Hook
For my baby-sized version, I used Paintbox Simply Aran, a #4 weight yarn that is warm, durable, and comes in gorgeous colors. With a 5mm hook, the stitches stay snug enough for little ones’ blankets.
For larger blankets (throw size and up), I recommend bumping up to a 6mm hook. This adds more drape, reduces yardage, and avoids the dense, heavy feel that some blankets can have at bigger sizes. Win-win! Just note that if you move up to a 6mm hook you will need to adjust your starting row by multiples of 2 stitches.
