Autumn Roads Beanie & Scarf Set

Autumn Roads Beanie–A cabled crochet beanie

The Autumn Roads Beanie and Scarf was made with the idea that I wanted a cabled set that no one else had already done.  I wanted it to work up faster than typical crochet cabling does, and I wanted a consistent look about it.  Thus the Autumn Roads Beanie and Scarf was born!  This set is also a unisex beanie so anyone can wear it!

The Cable Stitch

The Cable Stitch is worked up totally different than traditional crochet cabling.  you won’t be doing any triple crochets or crossing over things so much as with traditional cable crocheting.  Instead, you will be creating what I refer to as “bridges” and skipping only a couple of stitches.  To work the Cable Stitch, you will to note that the multiple is 3+1.

Abbreviations:

Ch(s) – chain(s)
Ss – slip stitch
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Sk – skip
Rep – Repeat
CS—cable stitch
FO—fasten off
Scblo—single crochet back loop only
Sc – single crochet
RS—right side
WS—wrong side

How to work the Cable Stitch:

Step 1:

Make a foundation row of a multiple of 3 single crochets and add one more to it.  Or, chain up in multiples of 3 and add 2 (one is for a turning chain), then do your single crochets across the chain.  Chain 1, and turn.

Step 2:

Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch.  Chain 3 and skip 2 stitches.  Single crochet in the next stitch.  Turn the work and then work 3 single crochets along the “bridge” of the chain 3 that you had just made.  Work these single crochets into the actual chains, not over or around them.  Slip stitch into the nearest single crochet (this would be the first one of the row).  Turn your work again.  Push the “bridge” down and place one single crochet into each of the 2 skipped stitches that are behind the “bridge”.

Step 3:

From where you are right now, chain 3 and skip 2 stitches.  The single crochet that we just did a chain 3 from, we’re going to call this “SC A”.  Now single crochet in the next stitch (after you skipped two stitches)–we’re going to call this one “SC B”.  TURN your work and place one single crochet in each of the 3 chains.  Now slip stitch into “SC A”.  TURN.  Push down the “bridge” and place one single crochet into each of the 2 skipped stitches behind the “bridge”.

Step 4:

Continue working step 3 until you only have 1 stitch left.  After you have completely finished step 3 for the last time, place one single crochet into the last stitch of the row.  TURN.

Step 5:

This is the RETURN ROW–chain 1 and place a single crochet in the first stitch.  Next, place 2 single crochet in the next stitch–there will be a couple of legs of a single crochet stitch from the previous row you will need to skip over that appear to be in the way.  Then place one single crochet in the next stitch.

An Explanation

You are working into the 2 skipped stitches from the previous row that are behind the “bridge”.  Since the multiple is 3 to work the cable stitch itself, we need to keep the multiple correct, so this is why we’re doing 2 single crochet in one stitch, and one single crochet in another.

We cannot work into the single crochet from the previous row that we slip stitched into (remember SC A?) because it’s already been worked into (when we did that slip stitch), so this is why on the return row, we’re skipping it and putting the 2 single crochet into the stitch right after it.

Continue On…

Continue working 2 single crochet in one stitch, and 1 single crochet in the next all down the row, ending with a single crochet in the final stitch.

I hope that didn’t confuse you further but this is also why we have this handy dandy video, here:
