The Elegant Cocoon Cardigan – Free pattern
I love the Elegant Cocoon Cardigan because it is such a simple pattern that looks fabulous once completed. I guarantee even a beginner crocheter will be able to master the drunken granny stitch in no time once the first couple of rows are done. If you can chain and double crochet then you can make this gorgeous spring / summer / early autumn cardigan!
A perfect match
The Elegant Cocoon cardigan uses the same stitch and the Elegant Hair Scarf (which is also a free pattern on the blog! WINK WINK)
So if you like matching accessories then we have you covered!
For all ages and optional extras!
This pattern is not age specific. It would look great on a teen, on her mum or on her grandma! The pdf version has options for sleeves and cuffs and also a ribbed border around the cardigan to which you may add a loop and button very easily.
The edging and sleeves are great additions if you want to use this during the autumn months. Or on those freezing winter days cozy up into it on the sofa with a hot chocolate whilst watching your favourite movie or reading a good book.

Pattern notes:
- Written in US terms
- This pattern is reversible
- Ch3 at the start of the row does count as a st.
- To make the pattern wider you could use a bigger hook or a heavier weight yarn.
Row 1: CH169 (199/224/249)
(4DC, CH3, DC) in 6th CH from hook, *SK4 CH’s (4DC, CH3, DC) in next CH*.
Rep from * to * until you have 3 ch’s remaining. Sk 2CH, DC in last CH, turn.
Row 2: CH3, work (4DC, CH3, DC) in each CH3 sp across, DC in the top of the turning CH from the previous row, turn.
Rows 3 on: Repeat row 2 until your panel measures 31” (33”/35”/37”) high (or desired height)
FO, weave in ends.
Assembly:
Step 1: To assemble your cardigan, fold it in half so that the chain row and the last row you worked are together at the bottom with right sides facing.
Step 2: From the top mark your armholes. You will need to measure down 6’’ (7’’/8’’/8.5’’) as per the figure photo below.
Do this on both sides.
Step 3: Whip stitch from the bottom edge (remember, this is where your foundation row and last row worked meet) up to your stitch marker.
FO and weave in ends.
Repeat this step for the other side.
And there you have the basic Elegant Cocoon Cardigan!
Remember if you would like to add sleeves, cuff or ribbed edge you can find these instructions in the pdf pattern.
