Why I Put This Collection Together
I don’t know about you, but this summer has been a warm one!
Here in the UK we’ve experienced one of the hottest summers since records began, and while I absolutely love seeing the sunshine, it does make crocheting large blankets and chunky winter accessories a little… challenging.
The irony is that as a crochet designer, this is exactly the time of year I’m working on autumn and Christmas patterns. While everyone else is reaching for sunglasses and ice cream, I’m surrounded by cables, scarves, blankets and cosy makes that won’t be published for several months yet!
So it got me thinking…
Not everyone wants a huge project sitting on their lap when the temperature is climbing. Sometimes all you want is something small, light and satisfying that you can pick up for half an hour while enjoying a cup of tea in the garden.
That’s exactly why I created this roundup.

Here are a few things that help me keep stitching comfortably when the temperatures climb.

A shady spot under a tree, a garden umbrella or a covered patio can make a huge difference. Not only will you be more comfortable, but your yarn will thank you too!
Stay hydrated
Keep a bottle of water (or your favourite cold drink) nearby and remember to sip regularly. Crochet is much more enjoyable when you’re not feeling dehydrated.
Save the chunky projects for later
There’s no rule saying you have to finish that king-size blanket in July. Pop it aside and enjoy some smaller projects until cooler weather returns.
Choose breathable fibres
Cotton, bamboo, linen and cotton blends tend to feel much nicer to work with during the summer than thick acrylic or wool yarns.
Crochet earlier or later in the day
If possible, avoid the hottest part of the afternoon. A peaceful morning or a cooler summer evening often makes for much more comfortable stitching.
Protect your skin
If you’re crocheting outdoors, don’t forget the sunscreen. Just make sure you’ve rubbed it in properly before handling your yarn—you probably don’t want SPF decorating your latest masterpiece!
