Crochet the Music Square – Free Pattern
Spread the love

The music square is the third square in the 2022 CAL scrap busting CAL.

Back in January I had the idea to create one square per month based on the theme of ‘international days’. I wanted to keep away from religion and politics and just make this CAL something that everyone could join in and use their scraps and stash.

So far we have had the logic square and the cancer ribbon square.

Why a music square?

March 1st is International Music Therapy day. It is a day for people all around the world to celebrate the healing power of music. People have always known and spoken about the power and benefits of music as well as how it makes life better. Music therapy is recognised medically for the benefits it has.

You will have seen the videos of dementia patients who enjoy a good song or listening to music. For some reason, even when they forget who their loved ones are, music can stay with them and make them happier and less frustrated.

Some of the other conditions it helps with include cerebral palsy, autism, learning disabilities, and many other types of disabilities.

Music is also something I have a background in. Fun fact – Did you know I can play the flute? In fact my flute is in some of the pictures for this square!

I really enjoyed designing and making the music square because of both my memories and the importance of music in just about every culture around the world.

You see those blue music bars in the top corner? They are evidence that I was using my scraps from previous projects! They were not in my original design, but when I made my prototype I got all of the way to that last corner and ran our of the background colour! So I came up with the idea of adding the music bars in that corner (which incidentally also used the last of that blue yarn from my scrap bucket).

I am really please with how well these squares are turning out.

  • #4 weight yarn 6 colors (or at least 2)
  • 5mm hook

This music square block is 25 x 25 squares. Finished size once blocked is approximately 12” square depending on tension if using HDC

Pattern notes:

  • Written in US terms

  • This is corner to corner graph and is worked bottom right to top left on the right side.
  • To work out how much yarn you will need you will need for your music square you will need to do a sample swatch with the stitch you intend to use (HDC or DC) and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
