Inspirations Behind the Design of Crochet Halloween Placemats

When I first started designing this Halloween placemat set in 2020, I knew it would be something special. The black cat and witches hat were the first two designs I worked on, and the bat and moon, as well as the pumpkin, followed shortly after. It was my daughter’s pure love and fascination with Halloween that sparked the creation of these designs. Every year, her excitement would bubble over as soon as October approached, begging us to start decorating the house on October 1st. She absolutely loved dressing up, whether it was in spooky costumes or helping to create a festive atmosphere around the house.

One of my fondest memories is from just a few days before Halloween—around the 28th of October—when she’d start helping me with fun little pranks and surprises. We’d make “spooky” dinners for her dad, like sneaking plastic spiders on top of a pasta bake or serving blackcurrant juice with floating eyeballs! Her enthusiasm and creativity made Halloween a magical time for our family, and I wanted to capture some of that joy and playfulness in these placemat designs.

Construction of the Tapestry Crochet Halloween Placemats

The spooky Halloween designs on these crochet placemats were created in tapestry crochet. If you have not tried it before, this technique is simpler than you may think. Best Yarn for Halloween Crochet Placemats

This set of crochet Halloween placemats was made with Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a worsted-weight yarn that’s easy to care for. When they need a refresh, you can just throw them in the washing machine. Memento cotton or Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet would also work well for this pattern.

• Any 4 weight (worsted/aran weight) cotton yarn of your choosing, approximately 500-700 yards for each placemat
  • I used Paintbox Cotton Aran
• 5mm hook
• Scissors
• Tapestry Needle
• Stitch Markers optional to mark first or last stitch of the row.
• Measuring Tape optional

Gauge:

Using sc as your gauge stitch, 2’’x 2’’ is 8 stitches x 10 rows

Sizing:

Finished size is 17.5’’ wide by 11’’ high.
