Spread the love

Are you ready for part 2 of the Free 4th July Throw Pillow CAL? This post contains the instructions for the back panel.

The CAL:

This CAL (or crochet along) is a collaboration between myself and Erin from Juniper and Oakes. We are both really pleased with how well it has turned out, especially since it was a last minute, impromptu concept that we came up with less than a week ago!

If you would like to know more about the CAL and get the release schedule you can find out more here.

Erin released part 1 over on her blog. If you missed it you can get the free pattern for the front panel by clicking the button below:

Just want the PDF Pattern?

That is absolutely fine! There is only one place that you can get the pattern pdf!

The PDF includes chart, written and colour block instructions for the front panel, written instructions and links to video tutorials for the stitches in the back panel, and joining instructions. There is everything you could need in the PDF Pattern, except someone to make it for you!

If you want it click the button below.

Things you need and need to know before you start ….

A confident beginner who can read a basic pattern should be able to make this back panel. I give the starting option of foundation stitches or chains. There is also a video linked below for the camel stitch (or HDC in the third loop)

For the whole pillow the materials you will need are:

  • #4 weight yarn of your choosing – I used paintbox simply aran yarn and used :
    • White – 1 skein
    • Red – 1 skein
    • Blue – 1.25 skeins
  • 6mm hook (you can use a 5mm or 5.5 if you prefer)
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
Gauge   Not important as long as both panels are the same size!  Sizing   Once completed your panels should be approximately 16” wide (or large enough to fit a pillow form)
AbbreviationsCh(s)—chain(s)
St(s)—stitch(es)
rep—repeat
sk—skip
FHDC – foundation half double crochet
SC – single crochet
HDC – half double crochet
DC – Double crochet
SS – slip stitch
YO—yarn over
FO—fasten off

Pattern Notes for the back panel

Written in US terms.

The stitch count is in parenthesis at the end of each row.

For the back panel you need only have an odd number of stitches to get the width you need so it is super easy to adjusted stitch counts for this one!

Special stitches:

Camel st – Also known as HDC third loop. To do this:

YO, insert hook into the THIRD loop of the HDC from the previous row (this will be a horizontal bar below the two loops you normally work into.  If working in the round, it will be on the INSIDE of your work).  Pull up a loop, YO and pull thru all 3 loops on your hook.
