The Bee Afghan

The Bee Afghan
Spread the love

As soon as I designed the Bee Pillow I knew that I had to make a matching Bee Afghan. I also knew that I wanted it to be a corner to corner project. Isn’t it great?

My throw measures approximately 50″ wide and 62″ high.

The bee afghan

The bee afghan is actually not as complicated as you might think. If you made our bunny pillow then this pattern is actually a great next step! There are a few more color changes throughout the bee afghan but not as many as you would think.

I just love this design. Bees do so much for us and I think we tend to forget that sometimes. I have planted quite a few bee friendly plants in my garden and try to help them out wherever I can… although I don’t think I would be up to the challenge of being a bee keeper!

I like the use of white as my background colour – for me it’s so fresh and clean and really makes the bee and the pretty tulips stands out. Tulips are my favourite flowers, along with yellow roses, so they also made it into my afghan.

Yarn

I used Caron simply soft for my afghan for everything except the side of the bee’s wings. For that I used paintbox simply aran.

I like to use Caron simply soft in my corner to corner projects. I know Sara says that the yarn splits, but I have only ever had that issue once. I like the slight sheen that the yarn has for a c2c project and it is easy to use and looks great. I used the following colors:

    • White
    • Black
    • Super duper yellow
    • Strawberry
    • Vert (scrap amounts for the stalks)
    • Green
    • Gray (for this one I used Paintbox simply aran)

If you are thinking about using something else then I would suggest Paintbox Simply Aran yarn. Your project will have just as much definition but it will feel a little thicker and fluffier. It washes just as well as the Caron simply soft and looks great for years. (I made my father-in-law a c2c afghan of a silverback for his 70th birthday about 4 years ago and it still looks great now!)

Please remember with c2c patterns we do not give yardage amounts for each color because everybody’s gauge is different. Instead we give the number of blocks of each color. The counts you need are below.

Pattern notes:

  • Our patterns are always written in US terms
  • This pattern is reversible so if you carry any yarn remember to work over it as you go. It is not recommended to carry yarn for more than a few C2C blocks.
  • This is a traditional C2C graph and is worked diagonally from the bottom right hand corner. It ends at the top left-hand corner.
  • As noted above, to work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch and then measure how much yarn you used per C2C block multiplying that by the number of blocks of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
  • Color charts with stitch totals are listed under the picture graph . There is a larger graph that can be printed off provided at the end of this pattern.
