This sandcastle section is Part 9 of the crochet along, where each section of the blanket has been designed by a different crochet designer. The best part? The charts for every section will remain forever free on each designer’s blog, so you can work through the blanket at your own pace.
Why a Sandcastle?
When I think of summer, my mind immediately wanders to the seaside.
Until very recently, I lived in a traditional coastal town where the beach was literally a two-minute walk from our front door. On warm mornings, we’d open the windows and be greeted by the smell of the sea… and occasionally the seaweed too. It’s funny how even that smell now brings back wonderful memories.
Our little town had everything you’d expect from a proper British seaside resort—fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours on every corner, summer fairs on the promenade, and tourists everywhere carrying buckets and spades.
And every year there was a hugely popular sandcastle competition on the beach.
So when I was asked to design a section for this crochet along, it didn’t take me long to decide what I wanted to create. Summer, for me, means ice creams, sunshine, and sandcastles.
I definitely don’t think about the seagulls.
You know… the ones that scream at 5am, swoop at your head because they’ve decided your roof belongs to them, or casually steal your chips right out of your hands. We’ll leave them out of this particular summer memory!

The Inspiration Behind This Design
As soon as I was invited to participate in the Great Summer Mosaic Crochet Along, I knew my section had to be something beachy.
How could it not be?
The seaside has always played a huge role in my life and has given our family countless happy memories. From long walks on the beach to building sandcastles with little ones, there is something wonderfully nostalgic about a simple bucket and spade.
This easy mosaic crochet pattern captures that playful summer spirit perfectly. The sandcastle motif is fun, cheerful, and instantly reminds me of those carefree days spent by the sea.
I also wanted to create a section that beginner mosaic crocheters could enjoy. Mosaic crochet can sometimes look intimidating, but this design uses straightforward stitches and repeats to create a beautiful image without being overwhelming.
Construction of the Design
This sandcastle mosaic crochet section is worked flat and in rows using basic overlay mosaic crochet techniques.
The design uses only simple stitches and has an easy repeat, making it suitable for beginners who already know how to work single crochets and double crochets.
You can have fun with your colour choices and add extra colour changes if you’d like, but honestly, this section looks absolutely stunning worked in just two solid colours.
Because of the easy repeat, the design can also be adjusted according to the stitch multiple should you wish to use the sandcastle motif in another project.

Pattern Notes
- This pattern uses overlay mosaic crochet techniques.
- Written in US terms.
- It is worked flat and always from right to left. (Unless you are left-handed of course. Then it will be right to left).
- There is most definitely a right side and a wrong side to overlay mosaic crochet. You will always work right side.
- You may want to start each row with a ch1. If you prefer to do this, Ch1 sts do not count as a st.
- When working single crochet you work into the back loop only of the previous row as you would ordinarily. For example, if you are working row 5 you will work into the back loop only of row 4.
- Work dc in front loop of stitch 1 row below. So if you are working row 6 you will double crochet front loop only into row 4. Don’t worry – these are very easy to spot when working up your project! See the image below.
- The overall stitch count remains the same in each row.
- The stitch multiple for this section is 24 +3
How To Work The Main Mosaic Crochet Stitches
Before you dive into this free mosaic crochet pattern, let’s quickly cover the two key stitches used:
BLOsc (Back Loop Only Single Crochet)
Insert your hook into the back loop only, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through both loops. This creates the ridged texture that mosaic crochet is known for.
FLOdc (Front Loop Only Double Crochet)
Work your double crochet into the front loop only of a stitch from the previous row, dropping down to create the mosaic design e.g. if you are working row 6 you take the FLO of the stitch from row 4, if working row 9 take it from row 7 etc. See photo below.
This is what forms the actual pattern (your squirrel will magically appear here!).
