Sweet Dreams Blanket – Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

If you’re looking for a crochet baby blanket pattern that is warm, unique, and just a little bit addictive to make… you’re in the right place.

The Sweet Dreams Blanket is a beautifully textured baby blanket that combines puff stitches and crossed double crochets to create a fabric that’s both cosy and eye-catching. It’s one of those patterns where you just have to do one more row… and suddenly it’s bedtime and your tea has gone cold.

I named this design the Sweet Dreams Blanket because the texture reminded me so much of those little wrapped boiled sweets (candy). You know the ones — slightly crinkly, a bit nostalgic, and impossible to ignore. That same soft, rounded texture shows up in this blanket, giving it a comforting, dreamy feel that’s perfect for babies… and honestly, anyone who loves a cosy throw.

This is an intermediate crochet baby blanket pattern, as it uses puff stitches and crossed double crochets to create that gorgeous texture. But don’t let that scare you off — if you’re a confident beginner ready to stretch your skills a little, this is a fantastic project to level up with.

The Inspiration Behind This Baby Blanket Pattern

Like many good things in crochet… this one started with a bit of playful experimentation.

Towards the end of 2025, I was sitting with some yarn and just playing with texture for future designs. No pressure, no plan — just seeing what would happen if I combined different stitches. And then… this happened.

As soon as I worked a few rows, I knew I had something special. The combination of puff stitches and crossed double crochets created a texture that felt warm, soft, and just a little bit indulgent — exactly what you want in a baby blanket pattern.

At the time, the Baby Shower Event hosted by Ambassador Crochet was in the works, and I instantly knew this design would be perfect for it. It has that balance of being practical, beautiful, and gift-worthy — ideal for welcoming a new little one into the world.

The puff stitches add warmth and dimension, but here’s the clever bit: they only “pop” on one side of the blanket. The underside is completely flat, making it soft and comfortable against baby’s skin. Because of the puff stitches, this blanket does use a little more yarn than some of my other designs — but the texture is absolutely worth it.

Construction of the Sweet Dreams Blanket

This crochet baby blanket pattern is worked flat in rows, making it easy to customise as you go.

You can:

  • Keep it one solid colour for a classic look
  • Add stripes or colour changes to suit your style
  • Use stash yarn if you’re feeling adventurous

The blanket is finished with a super simple edging — because honestly, the main texture does all the talking here.

While this is an intermediate baby blanket pattern, confident beginners can absolutely give it a go. The puff stitches and crossed double crochets might be new, but they’re very learnable — and once you get into the rhythm, it’s smooth sailing.

Row 1: FHDC 112. OR

CH 113, hdc into second ch from hook and each ch across.  (112 sts).

Row 2: Turn, Ch1, dc in 1st st, *sk next st, dc in next st, dc in sk’d st (crossed double crochet completed), dc in next st.* Rep from * to * across.

Note: you will end the row having completed the entire repeat.

Row 3: Turn, Ch1, sc in first st, * ch2 PS between the legs of the next xdc (see Figure 1) ch2, sc in next dc*. Rep from * to * across.

Note: you will end with a sc in the last dc of the row below.

Row 4: Turn, Ch1, dc in 1st st, *sk the ch2 and the PS, dc in next ch2 sp, dc in sk’d ch2 space, dc into the sc from the previous row* Rep from * to * across.

Note you will end with a dc into the sc from the previous row.

Row 5: Turn, ch1, hdc in first st and each st across.

Rows 6 onwards: Rep rows 2-5 until your blanket measures approximately 35” tall. I would recommend ending with a row 5 so that your blanket ends how it began i.e. with a hdc row.

Border:

You can add any border that you choose to your blanket. However, because it is so full of texture I choose a simple 1 round sc border for my blanket to avoid a clash of textures.

To work this :

Turn, ch1, sc in first st and each st across until you reach the end of the row. [sc, ch1, sc] into the corner stitch.

Turn your blanket so that you are working down the side, sc evenly down the side of the blanket.

Note: I found that working 1 sc into the end of rows 3 and 5 and 2 sc into the end of rows 2 and 4 worked well for me.

[sc, ch1, sc] into the corner / last stitch of the side.

Turn your blanket so that you are working along the bottom edge, sc in each st across. [sc, ch1, sc] into the corner stitch.

Turn so that you are working up the final side of your blanket and sc evenly up. [sc, ch1, sc] into the corner / last stitch

FO and weave in ends.

Final Thoughts

If you make one, I’d love to see it!
