Inspiration behind the design

The inspiration behind the Funky Bobbles Women’s Scarf pattern came from a desire to craft a truly distinctive accessory that not only catches the eye but also evokes a sense of joy.

My goal was to create a scarf with a difference – one that elicits smiles from everyone. I wanted to make the wearer feel special while feeling absolutely comfortable.

By incorporating various textures, this scarf pattern is a feast for all of the senses. It creates a tactile experience as well as a visual one. Every time I see this scarf I just want to feel it!

Moreover, the design has a nod towards sustainability and resourcefulness. I have an accumulating stash of part-used skeins and scrap yarn from previous projects. This scarf allowed me to use some of these scraps into the funky bobbles. It transforms yarn that might have been overlooked into vibrant accents that add character and charm.

This design is not just a crochet project. It’s a journey of creativity, comfort, and repurposing, aimed at bringing a touch of warmth and individuality.

Construction of the design

The construction of this women’s scarf crochet pattern has been thoughtfully designed based on feedback from my previous patterns. Worked in short rows, this scarf comes together faster than you might think.

Divided into three distinctive sections, the scarf offers a delightful rhythm to the crocheting journey. The first and third sections mirror each other. This showcases the playful and eye-catching funky bobble texture that adds a touch of whimsy to the design. This symmetry not only enhances the scarf’s overall aesthetic but also provides a sense of balance and cohesion.

What adds to the versatility of this free crochet scarf pattern is the freedom it offers in terms of color choice. You can opt to follow my lead by using scrap yarn for a vibrant and eclectic look, or choose a single solid color for a more classic and understated style.

Whether you’re on a mission to declutter your yarn stash or prefer the simplicity of a monochrome palette, this crochet scarf pattern welcomes your personal touch, making it a truly customizable and enjoyable project.

The middle section of this scarf pattern provides a captivating tapestry of texture. This also creates to the scarf’s beautiful drape. When gracefully wrapped around the neck, this section transforms the accessory into a soft and visually pleasing garment. It is destined to become an everyday favorite.

So, whether you’re a seasoned crocheter looking for a new challenge or a beginner eager to expand your skills, this free crochet scarf pattern promises a rewarding experience and a scarf that seamlessly marries style and comfort.

The Yarn

This pattern is written for #4 weight (aran) yarn and requires a 5mm hook.

For my women’s XL scarf I used Paintbox Simply Aran. I used just over 3 skeins in cream, and my various scraps of around 35 inches in the same yarn for the bobbles.

You could use any 4 weight yarn for this project. The alternatives I would suggest are:

Wonder yarn from Furls Crochet

Brava Worsted Yarn from WeCrochet

Swish Worsted by WeCrochet

Tester Appreciation:

My testers loved working on this pattern! In fact they made several versions – in both solid colours and multi-colours. Check these versions out:

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

Any 4 weight yarn of your choosing – I used paintbox simply aran for my version.
5mm hook
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Stitch Markers optional to mark first or last stitch of the round
Measuring tape

Gauge:

Gauge is not important for this project as long as you are consistent and happy with the width of your scarf. However, for reference my gauge was 8 sts and 5 rows of the bobble repeat in 2”

Sizing:

There are 4 sizes to this scarf – adult small (530 yards), medium (570 yards), large (680 yards) and XL (740 yards). I made the XL version for these photos.

Abbreviations used:

Ch(s) – chain(s)
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Rep – Repeat
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc—double crochet
Dc2tog – double crochet 2 together
Dc3tog – double crochet 3 together
Fsc – foundation single crochet
Sp – space
Ss – slip stitch
FO—fasten off
YO—yarn over

Other notes:

●      Written in US terms
●      Ch1 or Ch2 at the start of a row does not count as a st unless otherwise stated.
●      Within the pattern sizing will be indicated as Women SM, (women MED, women LRG, women XL)
●      Stitch counts are only provided at the end of row 1 – they will remain the same for each subsequent row throughout.
●      Bobbles are worked on the right side of your scarf.
●      You must fasten off and re-attach your yarn at the other end before starting Row 31 (35, 39, 45)
For rows 1-30 (34, 38, 44) the odd numbered rows are the right side of your scarf.
For rows 31 (35, 39, 45) on, the even numbered rows will be the right side of your work.
If changing colours for the bobble stitches, use your bobble colour to work the final pull though of the stitch before, then work the bobble and change back to your main colour to work the final pull through on the bobble stitch.
●      It is up to you how you create your bobbles. I raided my scrap bucket and alternated 8 different colours for my version. You can use the same solid colour, different colours, team colours etc.
– From Row 24 (28, 32, 38) you may find that you need to increase your hook size by 1 or 2 sizes if it looks like your middle section is narrowing.

Special Stitches:

Fsc: STEP 1: Ch2, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop, ch using only the first loop on the hook, YO and pull through both loops.  This creates both the foundation chain and the first row of sc at the same time.

STEP 2: Insert hook into the chain you just made in the first step (it will look like 2 loops or a normal “v” of the bottom of the stitch), pull up a loop; ch1 using first loop on the hook only; YO and pull thru last 2 loops.

STEP 3: continue step 2 until you have desired number of foundation single crochet stitches.

You can find my tutorial on the foundation stitches:

For right handed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPHOG4VIi_Q&t=109s

Left handed – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqkTFzCja-A

Hdc in the third loop (also known as the Camel Stitch):

This is worked in the third loop of the HDC stitch (which will be on the front as we are working in rows). This pushes the top two “V” stitch loops to the side, creating a “knitted” look.  YO and insert hook into 3rd loop of indicated hdc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.

You can find my video at

Relaxed Bobble stitch: YO, insert hook into next st, YO and pull through, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook * YO, insert hook into same st, YO and pull through, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook. Rep from * 3 more times, YO and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
