Learn the Jasmine Stitch and Make a Stunning Free Cowl Pattern

There are crochet stitches… and then there’s the Jasmine Stitch. This beauty is floral by name and floral by nature—with delicate, petal-like clusters that practically bloom off your hook. So it felt only right to name this elegant new design the Perennial Grace Cowl.
Designed with texture and elegance in mind, the Perennial Grace Cowl uses just one round of Jasmine Stitch at the top and bottom of the cowl to add a decorative, floral-inspired finish. It’s that perfect “something special” for an otherwise easy and wearable cowl. Plus, it’s written in multiple sizes from age 2 to adult, so you can make a matching set for you and your mini-me (or your bestie, or your nan… you get the idea!).

About the Jasmine Stitch
The Jasmine Stitch isn’t your run-of-the-mill technique—it’s a stunner! Known for its three-dimensional, starburst-like petals, this stitch is a real showstopper. But honestly, it’s also a bit of a diva.
🧶 Skill Level: Intermediate – but totally doable with some patience and the right guidance. That’s where I come in!
I couldn’t find a single tutorial that explained how to work just one round of the Jasmine Stitch (which is what I needed for this design), so I rolled up my sleeves and figured it out myself. And now? I’ve created video tutorials for both right- and left-handed crocheters to help you do the same:

Handy Hint for Success
Here’s a top tip you’ll thank me for later: The Jasmine Stitch works best in this project when you drop down a yarn weight and hook size.
For example:
- I used #4 (aran) yarn and a 5mm hook for the main body of the cowl
- But for the Jasmine Stitch rounds, I switched to #3 (DK) yarn and a 4mm hook
Why? Because the stitch naturally poofs out and can create a bit of a bulge. Dropping down keeps the shape smooth and elegant and the size correct.

Insert hook into loop created by holding the working yarn, YO and pull through, pull through last loop on hook.
