Interested in Mosaic Crochet? Try My Dala Horse Pattern
The Dala Horse is my very first mosaic crochet pattern! I am hoping it will not be my last. I have an idea for a blanket that is very much a ‘me’ blanket and I think it will turn out just gorgeous in mosaic crochet.

Mosaic crochet has been something that I wanted to try for a long time. In fact it was on my list to learn in 2021. I just never found the time to try it.
Pattern Inspiration
March / April 2022 the course was out and I made my first mosaic crochet project – a little coaster. I got on with it really well and picked it up quickly.
And just like that Erin was signing me up to design something for her CAL! Oh my goodness! Talk about a fish out of water. I was intimidating myself thinking about it. She kept telling me I would be fine but I wasn’t so sure.
My initial plan for they CAL was to design some Christmas trees – they would be simple enough right? Then Erin asked if I would do something else because she had a couple of designers doing trees for the CAL.
So I went from Christmas trees to a Dala Horse!!!
The learning curve was steep but I did it! I’ll admit it wasn’t without the sweat and tears. But I am proud of the way my Data Horse turned out.
Construction of the design
The Dala Horse design uses basic mosaic crochet techniques. There are a couple of hints and tips I can give you to working mosaic if you have not tried it before:
- It is worked flat and always from right to left (unless you are left handed of course).
- There is most definitely a right side and a wrong side to mosaic crochet. You will always work right side.
- When working single crochets you work into the row below as you would ordinarily.
- When working double crochets these are worked into the row BEFORE the last one. So if you are working row 6 you will double crochet front loop only into row 4. Don’t worry – these are very easy to spot when working up your project!

The Yarn
You can use any weight yarn and an appropriate sized hook for this project. I used Wool of the Andes from WeCrochet in my red and white version.
As you can see form the testers pics the Dala Horse looks stunning in a variety of colour cominbinations!Wool of the Andes is a #4 weight yarn (so I used a 5mm hook) and is 100% Peruvian Highland Wool. It comes in 50g skeins (110 yards) and I used half a skein of white (around 55 yards) and 80 yards of red.
Initially this yarn doesn’t feel as soft as other yarns, but when it is worked up it feels gorgeous! And if you are making a blanket with it you will be so warm and cozy!
My testers used what they had in their stash – and they were all different brands.
