Witches Hat Placemat

Inspiration Behind the Design of the Crochet Halloween Witch Hat Placemat

Is Halloween complete without a witch? Growing up I remember so many parties where most of the girls were dressed up as witches. Of course, in the 1980’s the dresses were usually a black bin liner with head and arm holes cut in and a belt or some string to pull it in and give it some shape. And we would spend hours designing and creating our own witches hats! Today it is all about the store bought costumes. Being crafty I find this a little disappointing… although there have been some years where I have been super grateful for the ability to purchase store bought quickly!

I originally designed this Halloween witch hat placemat pattern, along with the other three in the set, in summer of 2020. The cat and the witches hat versions were part of the Home for Halloween E-Book publication. This was a set of 6 crochet patterns that you would use to decorate your home (see below). The bat and pumpkin placemats were released independently the following year.

I was thrilled at how many of you liked these patterns!

They’ve always popular at home. The children (big and small) always request these crochet placemats be used on the table, regardless of the season. Of course, they are a must in Fall!

I hope your family and friends will enjoy them just as much.

Construction of the Tapestry Crochet Witch’s Hat Placemat

This placemat design of a twisted witch hat is created in tapestry crochet. This technique is simpler than you may think. It’s just basic single crochet stitches with simple colour changes. You can learn how to change colours and how to carry your yarn with my tapestry crochet video tutorial.

The Yarn

I always recommend using cotton for placemats and kitchen projects. It is durable, looks great for years, is easy to care for and you can get it in so many colours.

This set of crochet Halloween placemats was made with Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a worsted-weight yarn that’s easy to care for. When needed, you can just throw them in the washing machine.

Memento cotton or Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet would also work well for this pattern.
