Behind the design

I actually designed and tested this crochet pumpkin placemat pattern back in 2020 as a fun bit of crochet decor for Halloween. But the timing worked out for me to release it the following year as part of a mini Halloween CAL event hosted by CAL Central. Years later, this timeless design is still perfect to dress up your Halloween table!

While this CAL ended several years ago, there’s always some new CAL or event going on! If you want to stay up to date about events we are involved in, you can join our CAL mailing list.

And if you don’t want to miss anything, sign up for our weekly newsletter, too! I usually send it out on Wednesday and let you know about pattern releases, video tutorials, etc. We’ll also sometimes do a quick second email if we are in an event with a new pattern that I think you guys would love to know about!

Construction of the Crochet Pumpkin Placemat

This crochet jack o lantern placemat, with its smiling face, is created in tapestry crochet. This technique is simpler than you may think. It’s just basic single crochet stitches with simple colour changes. You can learn how to change colours and how to carry your yarn with my tapestry crochet video tutorial.

The Yarn

This set of crochet Halloween placemats was made with Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a worsted-weight yarn that’s easy to care for. When they need a refresh, you can just throw them in the washing machine. Memento cotton or Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet would also work well for this pattern.

  • Any 4 weight (worsted/aran weight) cotton yarn of your choosing, approximately 500-700 yards
  • 5mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Markers optional to mark first or last stitch of the row
  • Measuring Tape optional

Gauge:

Using sc as your gauge stitch, 2’’x 2’’ is 8 stitches x 10 rows

Sizing:

Finished size is 17.5’’ wide by 11’’ high.

Abbreviations:

  • Ch(s) – chain(s)
  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • Sc – single crochet

Pattern notes:

  • Written in US terms
  • Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • There are no special stitches used in this pattern.
  • This is a side-to-side graph and is worked right to left on the right side (odd numbered rows) and left to right on the wrong side (even numbered rows), and from the bottom to the top. The arrows at the beginning of the row indicate which way you are working that row. It is a reversible pattern, so remember to crochet over any yarn you carry!

I’ve provided an estimated yardage above. However, to work out more accurately how much yarn you will need, you can do a sample swatch and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch, multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to work in at the end.
