Inspiration behind the design

I have been having so much fun with this relaxed bobble stitch this fall! And it all started with the bobbles blanket strip for the Serenity Blanket CAL. I just knew that I needed to create the contorting blue version for my 4 year old nephew.

It is amazing how the use of colour can completely change the feel of a project. And you can have so much fun working up this free crochet scarf pattern while simultaneously reducing your scrap bucket!

Construction of the design

The Funky Bobbles Scarf crochet pattern is worked in short rows from one end of the scarf to the other. Because of this it is so easy to adjust the size – if you want an adult size pick the teen starting chain and simply make it longer!

You could also sew the ends together and create an infinity scarf or cowl version! My 11 year old niece has asked me to make her a cowl version in greens.

The Yarn

You can use any 4 weight yarn that you have for this project. I recommend first raiding your scrap bucket before you delve into your unused yarns, unless you have a specific colour way in mind.

It is no secret that I have been working with a lot of Paintbox Simply Aran Yarn for a while now. I love it, and it is so easy to work with. The colour choices are amazing and I can get it easily here in the UK.

Tester Appreciation:

Cheryl (cbell12 on Ravelry) created a hybrid of my two scarves. She went for the white background with a solid but contrasting deep pink bobble for her grand-daughter. And it looks fabulous!

Thank you Cheryl for helping me with this one!! You did a fabulous job!

Pattern for gauge swatch:
Row 1: Ch 19, sc in second ch from hook and each ch across (18)
Row 2: Turn, Ch2 (doesn’t count), dc in first st and each st across. (18)

Written in US terms
Ch1 or Ch2 at the start of a row does not count as a st unless otherwise stated.
Within the pattern sizing will be indicated as 3-5, (5-7, 8-10, teen)
Stitch counts are only provided at the end of row 1 – they will remain the same for each subsequent row throughout.
Bobbles are worked on the right side of your scarf.
It is up to you how you create your bobbles. For my white version with the different colored purple bobbles,  I raided my scrap bucket and alternated 4 different colours for my version. I used the following colour scheme and made sure I ended with the colour I started with:
A, B, C, D, C, B, A, B, C, D, C, B, A
You can use the same solid colour, different colours, team colours etc. Let your imagination run wild!

Special Stitches:

Fhdc – STEP 1: Ch2, YO, insert hook into 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop, ch using only the first loop on the hook, YO and pull through both loops.  This creates both the foundation chain and the first row of sc at the same time.

STEP 2: YO, insert hook into the chain you just made in the first step (it will look like 2 loops or a normal “v” of the bottom of the stitch), pull up a loop; ch1 using first loop on the hook only; YO and pull thru last 2 loops.

STEP 3: continue step 2 until you have desired number of foundation single crochet stitches.
