Looking for a free crochet pattern for a cute bunny wall hanging? Then I think I have you covered with this sweet addition.

It will make a great piece of springtime decor. But it will also be the perfect decoration for nurseries and children’s bedrooms!

This bunny wall hanging free crochet pattern is so versatile. It also uses very little yarn and works up quickly using colourwork (or tapestry) crochet.

The inspiration behind the design

I feel like I am saying this a lot at the moment, but this is another design that I had thought of over a year ago. I guess 2023 is the year to roll my sleeves up and release everything I have been sitting on or mulling over!

For the last few years, I have felt like the winters have been long. Maybe that is just an age thing? But by the time it gets to mid-January / early February, I am so ready for Spring and everything that is promised …. the crocus flowers and daffodils, the slightly warmer temperatures (and warm feet!), the longer days.

This wall hanging is a great Spring crochet pattern for the home. Or maybe it will be a baby shower gift for a nursery?

Construction of the design

This is a tapestry crochet pattern worked using single crochets (US terms), so there is a little colour work in there.

The bunny wall hanging is worked flat and in rows from the bottom up. At only 31 sts wide and 39 rows high is a nice project to keep you busy for an evening or two.

The edging is worked in the round once the panel is finished, and then to finish it off, the dowl and hanging strap are worked. (Don’t worry – I have a video tutorial for how to add the dowel linked below!)

The Yarn

You can work your crochet wall hanging in any yarn you want to. I used a #4 weight (aran) cotton for mine. I find that cotton looks much nicer for much longer, blocks well, and can be washed and dried without worrying too much about it.

Equally, you could use 4-weight acrylic yarn. This project would be a great stash buster for whatever you have on hand.

With this pattern, you can definitely play around with what you have on hand. If you use a different weight yarn (#3 weight / DK, #6 weight/chunky, etc), remember to use an appropriate-sized hook. A smaller-weight yarn with a smaller hook will create a wall hanging that is smaller than my stated measurements. Likewise, a chunky yarn and a bigger hook will make it bigger when completed. Something to keep in mind.

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

·      #4 weight yarn – I used 50 yards of Paintbox Simply Aran Cotton in both yellow and grey.
·      5mm hook
·      Scissors
·      Tapestry needle
·      Dowl – I used a 6mm dowl cut to 9” in length

Gauge:

My gauge was 11 sts and 9 rows in 2”

The great thing about a wall hanging is that you don’t usually have to meet gauge! Just be aware that it will affect your finished measurements if you don’t.

Sizing:

Blocked your bunny panel will measure approx. 7.5” wide by 9.5” tall if you meet my gauge and use the same size yarn and hook.

Abbreviations used:

·      Ch(s) – chain(s)
·      St(s) – stitch(es)
·      CA – colour A
·      CB – Colour B
·      FO – fasten off
·      Sk – skip
·      Rep – repeat
·      Ss – Slip stitch(es)
– YU – yarn under

Other notes:

– Written in US terms.

I started each row with a Chain 1 which does not count as a stitch.

The wall hanging is worked from the bottom up using tapestry crochet techniques (single crochet)

I strongly suggest you yarn under instead of yarn over for this one – it will reduce the size of the gaps between your stitches. (If you are unfamiliar with this I have a video linked below)

To change colour I recommend changing your yarn on the last pull-through of the previous stitch (video linked below).

You can carry your yarn if you wish or use bobbins for this one. I chose to use bobbins for the grey but carried the yellow yarn throughout. This was entirely personal preference and not a design requirement.

Yarn Under

Edging your crochet wall hanging:

For this, we will be working in rounds and continuing to yarn under in our sc stitches!

In CA:

Turn, Ch1, sc in each st across until you reach the final stitch of the row.

(Sc, ch 1, sc) all in that last stitch.

Turn your work 90 degrees so that you are working down the side.

Work 1 sc in the end of each row until you reach the final row.

(Sc, ch 1, sc) all in that last stitch.

Turn your work 90 degrees so that you are working along the bottom of your wall hanging.

Work 1 sc in the end of each row until you reach the final stitch.

(Sc, ch 1, sc) all in that last stitch.

Turn your work 90 degrees so that you are working up the side.

Work 1 sc in the end of each row until you reach the final row.

(Sc, ch 1,) in that last stitch.

Slip stitch to first st to join

FO and attach CB

Repeating the instructions for CA work 2 rounds in CB.

Hanging:

There are 2 options here.

Option 1: Chain 40, skip all of the stitches in the row and slip stitch to the last stitch of the row

OR

Option 2:

Single crochet over a length of 6mm dowl cut to approx. 2” longer than your wall hanging.

I have a video tutorial on how to do this:
