Free Corner to Corner Square – The Olive Tree Branch

Free Corner to Corner Square – The Olive Tree Branch
Spread the love

The 26th November is World Olive Tree Day! Yes, really!!

UNESCO gives more information about it on its website here. The olive branch has been used for centuries to symbolise peace, harmony and wisdom. It is well recognised around the world.

And of course, who could forget about the gorgeous edible olives and how much we use it in our favourite foods?

I have to admit I didn’t like olives growing up. Their taste is something that I think you mature into. But I do love a couple of olives every now and then!

Inspiration behind the design

When I was researching the international days for November I have to confess this was not my first design!

International Merlot Day was celebrated at the beginning of November and I was inspired with my merlot square. But it was pointed out to me that not everyone would appreciate an alcohol related square! In all honesty, I dont drink either … but it was a fun, vibrant square!

So after the Merlot square was designed and worked up I decided I should change it. World Olive Tree Day inspired me also.

But don’t worry – if you would prefer to purchase the e-book for the whole Kinship Afghan the Merlot Square is a bonus pattern! I am going to turn my square into a throw pillow for my sister’s outside bar room (it’s a man shed really but it looks great!)

The Olive Tree square came out really cute though didn’t it?

Construction of the design

This square is part of the Kinship CAL. It is a corner to corner block which is 25 x 25 blocks in size. I created mine using the half double crochet method rather than double crochet. But you can use either depending on the size you are after creating.

PART OF THE KINSHIP CAL 2022

Throughout 2022 I am releasing one square a month. The olive tree square is the 11th, so there is only one more square to go! The theme of this CAL is international days and holidays that are not political or religiously motivated. This is why I named it the Kinship CAL – everyone can join in and just have fun with it.

If you want to check out the other squares so far you can visit my round up post here.

Additionally, there is also the opportunity to purchase the e-book which contains all 13 (yes, there is one extra in there for November for the adults as noted above) for only £6.50! If this is your preference just click the button below

NEW TO CORNER TO CORNER?

I have a free learn to corner to corner course . It has helped a lot of crocheters to master corner to corner. Together we look at reading the patterns, as well as how to do the stitch, increases and decreases and colour changes. I will show you how to work both squares and rectangles too. We also make a couple of free pattern projects together!

The Yarn

When I set out to create the Kinship Afghan I did so with the intention of only using my stash and scraps. Not surprisingly I managed to do this with my collection of Caron simply soft from other projects. As long as you use the same weight yarn throughout this project is a great one for using those part skeins you have been saving rather than throwing them away.

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

·      #4 weight yarn 5 colors
·      5mm hook
·      Scissors
·      Tapestry needle
·      Blocking mats and pins (optional)

Gauge:

Does not matter as long as tension is consistent.

Sizing:

Once completed your square blocked is approximately 12”-14″ square depending on tension if using HDC

Abbreviations used:

·      Ch(s) – chain(s)
·      St(s) – stitch(es)
·      The arrows indicate which way the row is worked according to the graph – left to right or right to left.

Other notes:

– Written in US terms.
– Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
– There are no special stitches used in this pattern.

– This is corner to corner graph and as so is worked bottom right to top left on the right side.

To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch with the stitch you intend to use (HDC or DC). Then measure how much yarn you used per block and multiply that by the number of blocks of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
