Inspiration behind these Halloween crochet patterns
The inspiration for the Black Cat Placemat, along with the other designs in this Halloween collection, struck during the summer of 2020. Designing these patterns was fun and incredibly addictive. Once I started, the ideas just kept flowing, and I quickly found myself envisioning an entire series.
I was thrilled by how much you all enjoyed these patterns! They’ve been a hit in my own home, too. Even when it’s not fall, visiting kids still ask for these placemats when they come over for meals.
I hope your family and friends will find just as much joy in using them as we have.
Construction of the Tapestry Crochet Cat Placemat
This placemat design of a sleek black Halloween cat is created in tapestry crochet. This technique is simpler than you may think. It’s just basic single crochet stitches with simple colour changes. You can learn how to change colours and how to carry your yarn with my tapestry crochet video tutorial.
The Yarn
I recommend using cotton or a high cotton blend yarn for this pattern. Acrylic often does not withstand the heat of plates and meals very well (if at all), and it can be much more difficult to get any stains out. Cotton yarn is easy to care for and will not melt, stretch or become mis-shaped with use as a placemat.
This set of crochet Halloween placemat patterns was made with Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a worsted-weight yarn that’s easy to care for. When they need a refresh, you can just throw them in the washing machine. Memento cotton or Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet would also work well for this pattern.
