Crochet Cables and Hearts – Free Pattern for the Trailhead Treasures Section

Welcome to Part 6 of the Adventure in Cables Blanket Crochet Along! This week we’re diving into the heart of the blanket (literally) with the Trailhead Treasures section, a stunning combination of crochet cables and a unique crochet heart pattern that will add texture and meaning to your project.
This is the one of the options for the centre section of the Adventure in Cables Blanket, designed by myself and Kristine from Ambassador Crochet. Together, we’ve created the Adventure Blanket Series Crochet Alongs, where your blanket becomes more than just stitches—it becomes a story.
What Is the Adventure in Cables Blanket?
The Adventure Blanket is not just a crochet project—it’s a choose-your-own-adventure experience! Each Monday and Thursday, Kristine and I release a brand-new section. Which section you crochet depends on your answer to that day’s adventure question.
By the end of the journey, you won’t just have a one-of-a-kind blanket (with millions of possible combinations!)—you’ll also have a whimsical little tale that reflects the choices you made along the way. It’s part crochet, part storytelling, and 100% fun.
This is our second Adventure Blanket Series Crochet Along, and it’s been incredible watching so many crocheters take part. If you love texture, storytelling, and building something truly unique, this crochet along is perfect for you.
Introducing the Trailhead Treasures Section
The Trailhead Treasures section is inspired by a knitted heart pattern I came across some time ago. The challenge? There weren’t any crochet versions of it. So of course, I had to adapt it for crochet!
I wanted the hearts to have a clean, modern look while still incorporating traditional crochet cables. The solution was to interlink the hearts slightly on top of one another, giving a beautiful arc and shape to the design. The result? A pattern that looks intricate but is actually very achievable.

Here’s what you’ll love about this section:
- A bold crochet heart pattern created with cable techniques
- A clean, modern feel balanced with traditional twists and ridges
- The perfect centrepiece section for your Adventure in Cables Blanket
With both left- and right-handed video tutorials, I’ll walk you through the row repeat step by step so you can crochet this section without stress.

Yarn Choice
For my Trailhead Treasures section, I used Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted in the shade Ivory. This #4 weight yarn is 100% wool and becomes incredibly soft once washed.
Not only does it hold the stitch definition of the cables beautifully, but it’s also durable and perfect for a blanket you’ll treasure for years to come. I’ll definitely be using this yarn again for future projects. It’s a dream to work with.
Pattern Specifics
Skill Level / Difficulty: Intermediate – Uses a combination of post stitches that change from row to row, to create the twists in this cabled crochet heart pattern
Yarn: Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted yarn 3 skeins (approx. 620 yards)
Colour: Ivory
Hook: I used a 5mm but be consistent with whatever hook size you have previously used for your Adventure in Cables Sections.
Gauge: Not important as long as you are consistent with your other sections. For reference mine was 8 sts and 12 rows per 2″
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- FPcl – Front Post cluster
- FPdc – Front Post double crochet
- FPdc2tog – Front Post double crochet 2 together
- FPdtr – Front Post double treble
- FPtr – Front Post treble
- FSC – Foundation Single Crochet
- sc – single crochet
- sk – skip
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- yo – yarn over
Special Stitches:
- FPdc (Front Post double crochet) – yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.
- FPtr (Front Post treble) – yo 2 times, insert hook from front to back to front around st indicated, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.
- FPtc2tog (Front Post treble crochet 2 together) – This stitch is effectively worked over 2 sts to create 1 st. *YO twice, insert hook around next st to be worked, YO and pull through, [YO and pull through 2 loops on hook] twice. Rep from * once more around next st, YO and pull through all remaining 4 loops on hook.
- FSC (foundation single crochet) – This is an alternative to the chain start. I have both left and right handed video tutorials on how to do this on YouTube:
Notes:
- Pattern is worked in rows.
- Stitch count remains consistent unless otherwise noted.
- Cable stitches may feel tight—keep tension even for best results.
- When working FPDC or FPTC you will work into the stitch two rows below.
- Straight cable sections use FPdc. Crossed cable sections use FPtr.
- Every even numbered row is an easy sc across row – there are no FP sts to worry about.
- After Row 3 you will work FPDC or FPTC sts only into FPDC or FPTC sts from the row 2 rows below unless stated otherwise.
- When working a Front Post stitch this will count as a st against your current row. E.G. ‘SC in the first st, FPDC around next st’ – this FPDC counts as a st so you miss one stitch from the sc row below before working the next sc.
