Inspiration Behind the Design of the Crochet Bat Halloween Placemat

I actually designed and made the set in summer of 2020 but these timeless designs never go out of style.

Will Halloween patterns ever go out of style?!

I am thrilled at how many of you liked these patterns! They were fun to design and fun to make. And best of all, they’ve become a beloved family tradition. When the kids come to my house for meals, they still beg for these mats!

Construction of the Tapestry Crochet Bat Halloween Placemat

This placemat design, with a black bat fluttering in front of a full moon, is created in tapestry crochet. This technique is simpler than you may think. It’s just basic single crochet stitches with simple colour changes. You can learn how to change colours and how to carry your yarn with my tapestry crochet video tutorial.

The Yarn

This set of crochet Halloween placemats was made with Paintbox Cotton Aran. It’s a worsted-weight yarn that’s easy to care for. When they need a refresh, you can just throw them in the washing machine. Memento cotton or Dishie Cotton from WeCrochet would also work well for this pattern.

Pattern notes:

  • Written in US terms
  • Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • There are no special stitches used in this pattern.
  • This is a side-to-side graph and is worked right to left on the right side (odd numbered rows) and left to right on the wrong side (even numbered rows), and from the bottom to the top. The arrows at the beginning of the row indicate which way you are working that row. It is a reversible pattern, so remember to crochet over any yarn you carry! You can learn more about how to change colours and carry yarn in my tapestry crochet video tutorial.

I’ve provided an estimated yardage above. However, to work out more accurately how much yarn you will need, you can do a sample swatch and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch, multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to work in at the end.
