Acorn Square – Free 8″ Pattern

Acorn Square – Free 8″ Pattern
Spread the love

The Acorn Square was designed specifically for the Cozy Fall MAL hosted by Knitting with Chopsticks and Noors Knits.

When you think of Fall what do you think of? Falling leaves, the crunch under your feet as you walk, the brisk air, a hot drink? When Hortense and Noorain asked me if I would like to join their event and told me a little about it, the first thing I thought of was squirrels gathering their nuts! So within seconds I had the idea for the acorn square.

Usually I mull an idea over in my head for a day or two. But with this one within 24 hours the pattern was designed and written and I was half way through making it!

If you haven’t worked tapestry crochet before this one is a perfect project to get you started. Use those scraps from previous projects! I was so proud of myself for only using yarn from my scrap bucket.

Hints and tips for working up your Acorn Square using tapestry crochet.

Tapestry crochet is created using single crochet stitches. Here are a couple of hints and tips for working this pattern:

  • This pattern is reversible.
  • You can carry your yarn if you really really hate sewing in ends.
  • Personally I try not to carry yarn too much. Regardless of what you do you will always see a little of the carried colour through your work. With this particular pattern, if you carry the dark brown across the couple of caramel stitches in the top of the acorn it will be fine!
  • If you carry your yarn it makes it harder to block your project – pull it too tight and it pinches in your work, too loose and you will get loops of the carried yarn work its way out of your project.
  • When changing colour  do not work the final pull through on the stitch before. For a clean colour change finish the previous stitch with your new colour.
  • Work your starting chain fairly loose to help prevent your work from curling.
  • You can choose whether to start each row with a CH1 or just go straight into the sc stitches.
  • I recommend using a stitch marker to note the first and last stitches of each row.
  • Check your stitch counts! If you don’t have enough stitches to get to the end of the row, it is more than likely that you missed a stitch when you changed colour somewhere.

The free pattern is further down this post. However, if you prefer the pdf option which contains the chart, written and colour block instructions you can get a very inexpensive copy in the usual places.

Tester photos:

I usually forget to add some tester photos for you! I love seeing how my designs come out in different colours and different yarns.

The Cozy Fall MAL

The Cozy Fall MAL runs throughout October 2021 and was designed both as a CAL and as a way of raising money for a fantastic cancer charity.

You can follow along each weekday and get the patterns as they are released, or purchase the bundle. 50% of all proceeds from the bundle go towards CURE which supports families in whatever way they can when a child is diagnosed with cancer.

If you are interested in purchasing the bundle you can find out more by clicking the button below

The Acorn Square Pattern Information:

Materials:

  • #4 weight yarn 3 colours I used Caron Simply Soft in
    • White
    • Chocolate
    • Autumn Maize
  • 5mm hook
  • Stitch markers to mark first and last stitches (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking mats and pins (optional)

This is a side to side graph and is worked left to right on the right side and right to left on the wrong side and from the bottom to the top.

To work out how much yarn you will need you will need to do a sample swatch and then measure how much yarn you used per stitch multiplying that by the number of stitches of that color and adding some for the tails to be worked in at the end.
