Inspiration behind this crochet scarf with pockets design

I am going, to be honest here – this pocket scarf design was not what I started out to create. It actually began life as a cowl covered in one round of big hearts.

It looked great …. but it was really quite stiff due to the techniques and stitches used. Carrying yarn also did not help.

I really loved the design of the hearts. So I went back to the drawing board to see if I could use them in another, more practical way. The good news is that if you love the look of this, I have a couple of ideas for future projects!

I decided that the lack of drape would make the hearts perfect as pockets in a crochet scarf with pockets. The stitches are closed, so the pockets are entirely functional. At 8.5″ wide and approximately 9″ deep, you can use them for keys, a purse, doggy poop bags, or whatever you need! Not a lot will fall through between the stitches.

For this project, I really wanted something that feels like you are wearing a hug. And I wanted it to look eye-catching, unique, and classy.

And I think I achieved that! I am thrilled with how this pattern turned out.

The hearts have a right side and a wrong side due to the stitches and technique used to create them. Therefore it is important to check before starting your second heart that you are on an even-numbered row.

Whilst the pockets are mainly created using half double crochet (US terms), the hearts are worked using front and back post half double crochets. This makes it an intermediate pattern.

Crossed treble crochets and double crochets (US terms) help to create that gorgeous texture you see in the main body of the scarf.

The Yarn

I wanted this pattern to work up quickly. So I chose to use #5 weight yarn and a 6mm hook.

For the last year or so, I have been trying to remember to check out my stash before buying new yarn. I have been somewhat successful. My stash has not grown for the first year in forever, although it is not much smaller either! I must try harder this year LOL

Anyway, I eventually chose to use some of the Paintbox Simply Chunky that I already had. I had enough in the red and white to make a couple of these scarves…. so I have started my Christmas makes for this year too! Whoop whoop!

The Paintbox Simply Chunky yarn is 100% acrylic, so it washes well, and I have never had an issue with it fading. It is nice and soft and is so easy to work with.

Want to know more about the crochet scarf with pockets pattern?

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

·      #5 weight yarn 2 colors – 894 yards in main colour, 200 yards in colour B. I used Paintbox Simply Chunky in rose red (6 skeins) and paper white (2 skeins)
·      6mm hook
·      Scissors
·      Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Does not matter as long as tension is consistent. My gauge is 10DC  and 8 rows in 3”

Sizing:

Finished size once blocked is approximately 8.5” wide and 86” long. Pockets are approx 9″ deep.

Abbreviations used:

·      Ch(s) – chain(s)
·      St(s) – stitch(es)
·      CA – colour A
·      CB – colour B
·      FHD – foundation half double crochet
·      Sc – single crochet
·      Hdc – half double crochet
·      Dc – double crochet
·      Tc – treble crochet
·      Fphdc – front post half double crochet
·      Bphdc – back post half double crochet
·      Sk – skip
·      Rep – repeat
·      Ss – Slip stitch(es)

Other notes:

– Written in US terms.
– Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

The heart is folded over once completed to create the pocket. Because of this construction the ‘right side’ of the heart is created on the wrong side of the scarf.

When changing colour, it is best to pull through the new colour on the last pull through of the previous stitch.

You may carry your yarn for the hearts but be careful not to pull your work too tight. Personally, I chose not to carry my yarn for this reason.
