Trailblazers Path – Part 8 of the Modern Adventure in Cables Crochet Blanket

Trailblazers Path – Part 8 of the Modern Adventure in Cables Crochet Blanket
Spread the love

Crochet cables have a way of looking timeless, textured, and downright magical — and in this section of our Adventure in Cables Crochet Blanket, you’ll see exactly why. Welcome to Trailblazers Path, Part 8 of the Modern Adventure in Cables Crochet Along!

This crochet cable blanket section was inspired by twisting trails that meander through hills and valleys. It’s a modern take on traditional cables, and though it looks intricate, it’s surprisingly easy once you get the rhythm.

About the Adventure in Cables Crochet Along

The Adventure in Cables Crochet Blanket is no ordinary crochet project. This is the second CAL in our Adventure Blanket Series, hosted by myself and Kristine from Ambassador Crochet. You can find the first Adventure Blanket here or by clicking the photo below!

The First Adventure Blanket CAL

The concept for both blankets is simple but so much fun: as you crochet, you’ll answer a series of playful “choose-your-own-adventure” style questions. Each answer leads you to a different section of the blanket, so by the end you’ll have not only a unique crochet cable blanket but also a funny little story that reflects your journey.

Every Monday and Thursday, Kristine and I release a new section of the Adventure in Cables crochet along. Which one you crochet next depends entirely on how you answer that day’s question! It’s part crochet, part storytelling, and all about making the process just as enjoyable as the finished blanket.

Section 8: Trailblazers Path

Trailblazers Path is a modern crochet cable design that twists and leans, just like trails through the countryside. I’ll admit, the leaning played with my eyes a little when I first worked it up! But after a few repeats, the pattern straightens itself out beautifully and the effect is stunning.

This section proves that crochet cables don’t have to be complicated or fussy to make a big impact. Once you get through the set-up row for the cables (Row 2), the rest of the pattern is a breeze — you’ll simply be working front post stitches into the front post stitches of the row below. No hunting around for the correct single crochet to start a cable section, and no extra brain-work. Just smooth, rhythmic stitches that build texture row after row.

It’s modern, it’s bold, and it works up quickly.

Yarn I Used

For my Trailblazers Path section, I used Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted in the shade Gold. This is a #4 weight yarn that is 100% superwash wool — incredibly soft once washed, durable, and a joy to crochet with.

  • Yarn: Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted
  • Weight: #4 (Worsted/Aran)
  • Fiber: 100% wool
  • Amount used: approx. 347 yards

This yarn has excellent stitch definition, which makes the cables pop beautifully in this crochet blanket section.

Pattern Specifics:

Abbreviations used:

  • ch – chain
  • FPdc – Front Post double crochet
  • FPtr – Front Post treble
  • FSC – Foundation Single Crochet
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • yo – yarn over

Difficulty: Adv Beg/Intermediate – Uses a combination of post stitches that change from row to row, to create the twists

Sample used: Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted yarn 5.6 oz/158g, 347 yds/318m

Notes:

  • Straight cable sections use FPdc. Crossed cable sections use FPtr.
  • Odd numbered rows are right side rows, even numbered rows are wrong side rows.
  • After Row 3 you will work FPdc or FPtr sts only into FPdc or FPtr sts from the row 2 rows below.
  • When working a Front Post stitch this will count as a st against your current row. So for example, ‘SC in the first st, FPdc around next st’ – this FPdc counts as a st so you miss one stitch from the sc row below before working the next sc.

Special Stitches:

  • FPdc (Front Post double crochet) – yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.
  • FPtr (Front Post treble) – yo 2 times, insert hook from front to back to front around st indicated, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.
  • FSC (foundation single crochet) – This is an alternative to the chain start. I have both left and right handed video tutorials on how to do this on YouTube:
