Inspiration behind the design

The inspiration for the Pomander Cowl came from a moment of reflection as I was reviewing some of my older crochet patterns. I came across the Pomander Scarf, and it reminded me just how much I enjoyed creating that design, particularly the unique stitch combination. That sparked the idea for the Pomander Mug Rug, which was such a fun and satisfying project to work on. Revisiting these patterns reignited my love for the textures and the cozy fall vibes that these pieces evoke, and I knew right then that I wanted to expand the collection further.

Fall 2024 felt like the perfect time to bring this vision to life, and the Pomander Cowl is the next piece in this growing collection. It continues the theme of warmth, comfort, and versatility that runs throughout the Pomander series. I can’t wait to share more of what’s in store for this collection in the coming weeks!

Construction of the design

The Pomander Cowl is constructed in the round, featuring the same stitch combination that has become a signature of the Pomander Collection. Using extended half double crochets (US terms) and the crossed double crochet (or X stitch), this design creates a beautiful texture with plenty of visual interest. The rounds are worked seamlessly, with each one joined using a slip stitch for a polished, professional finish.

One of the highlights of this free crochet cowl pattern is its adaptability. Whether you prefer a lightweight yarn (3 weight / DK) for a more delicate drape or a chunky yarn for maximum warmth, the Pomander Cowl looks stunning in any yarn weight.

The stitch pattern really shines no matter what, maintaining the same cozy, textured feel that defines the Pomander patterns.

The Yarn

For the Pomander Cowl, you have the flexibility to choose from three different yarn weights: #3 weight (DK), #4 weight (Aran), or #5 weight (Chunky). This makes it easy to customize based on what you have in your stash or the kind of look and feel you’re going for.

Personally, I used Paintbox Yarns for my versions, mainly because I have a variety of it in different yarn weights. Paintbox Yarns are 100% acrylic, and I love how well they wash and maintain their appearance over time. Plus, they come in such a wide range of colors, making it a breeze to create the perfect fall accessory!

That said, the beauty of the Pomander Cowl is its versatility. You can truly use whatever yarn you have on hand, whether it’s cotton for a lighter feel, wool or alpaca for added warmth, or even cake and variegated yarns for a splash of color. The stitch pattern will shine no matter what fiber you choose, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your yarn selection. The world is your oyster with this one!
