Spread the love

Looking to winter and Christmas this year has been all about the men for me, which is what got me thinking about the stag placemat.

Note: this post may contain affiliate links.

Stags are universal – men, women and children like stags and your colour choices can really give your creation a completely different vibe. As I am focussing on trying to produce more patterns for men this year I went with the black and red which definitely ooze the masculine feels!

The Stag Collection

This one stag placemat has led to a lot of matching patterns here at Sunflower – we have 2 different sized afghans waiting in the wings, a throw pillow, a coffee cozy that uses buffalo check in back and red to name a few.

Do you want to see the other patterns in this collection?

I used the same stag head silhouette design to pull this collection together.

The smaller Stag afghan can be found as a bonus pattern in our Just for Him Bundle. You can find out more about that event and the bundle here.

There are some as yet unreleased patterns in there too!

The Stag Placemat

This pattern uses tapestry crochet (single crochet in US terms, double crochet in UK terms). There are not a lot of ends to sew in which is one of the things I love about this design! This means that you can make that set without having nightmares about the ends!

I made this one with dishy cotton from WeCrochet. I love working with this cotton and there are is a great selection of colours available too.

Materials needed:

  • #4 weight cotton is perfect for a placemat I used Dishie Cotton – 1/2 skein in black and 1.25 skeins in red
  • 4.5mm hook
  • Stitch markers to mark first and last stitches (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

Using sc as your gauge stitch, 2’’x 2’’ is 9 stitches x 11 rows

Size

Finished size is approx. 16’’ wide by 12’’ high.   You can use a bigger hook or thicker cotton with an appropriate sized hook to create a bigger version.

Other Pattern Notes:

Written in US terms – to be worked in rows using single crochet.

Chain 1 does not count as a stitch if you use a ch1 to turn.

There are no special stitches used in this pattern.

This is a side to side graph and is worked left to right on the right side (odd numbered rows) and right to left on the wrong side (even numbered rows) and from the bottom to the top.

Remember to crochet over any yarn you carry as this is a reversible pattern.

Color charts with stitch totals are listed under the chart below.
