Quick and Free Crochet Scarf Pattern: The Little Dots Scarf in 10 Sizes!

I’m so excited to introduce my latest free crochet scarf pattern—the Little Dots Scarf! Designed in 10 sizes from age 3 to adult men’s large, this versatile and textured scarf is a wonderful addition to the Little Dots collection and a fantastic stash-busting project for all seasons.
About the Little Dots Scarf
The Little Dots Scarf uses the same beautiful stitch combination found in my other Little Dots designs—the bib, preemie baby hat, blanket, washcloth, and preemie cocoon, as well as the Gorgeous George Blanket. This signature texture is created using treble crochets and slip stitches, resulting in a unique pattern of raised dots that lie flat when worn, making it comfortable for even the smallest of wearers.
This crochet scarf pattern was designed as part of the From Us to You Donation Challenge Event in 2025, which encourages makers to craft and donate handmade items to those in need. The Little Dots Scarf is a perfect candidate for charity projects, gifting, or adding a stylish handmade accessory to your wardrobe.

The From Us to You Donation Challenge Event
When we were discussing the stitches and stitch combinations we wanted to include for 2025, Sandra suggested this combination of treble crochets and slip stitches. Of course, I loved the idea—I had been waiting for the perfect opportunity to design a scarf with this one for quite a while! The timing was perfect.
We started the From Us to You Donation Challenge in 2024 and knew we wanted to continue it into 2025, but with some exciting tweaks. Each month, there is one hat and one scarf that share the same stitch combination somewhere within the design, so you can create matching sets! Sandra has already released the hat on her blog, and this scarf finishes off the set for February.
If you love creating coordinated handmade pieces, this challenge is a wonderful way to participate while also making beautiful, meaningful items for donation or gifting.
Why You’ll Love This Crochet Scarf Pattern
- 10 inclusive sizes – from toddler to adult men’s large.
- Beginner-friendly texture – uses basic stitches to create an eye-catching design.
- Perfect for baby accessories – the dots flatten when weight is added, making it soft and cozy.
- Versatile & customizable – add or remove rows of dots easily.
- Practical design – the main body of the scarf is worked in double crochets in the back loop only (BLO) and half double crochets, ensuring warmth without bulk.
- Zipper & hair-friendly – the limited number of raised dot rows prevents snags while still showcasing the gorgeous texture.
Yarn & Materials
- Yarn: #4 weight (Aran) yarn – I used Paintbox Simply Aran.
- Hook Size: Recommended 5mm hook (H-8) but can be adjusted for tension.
- Notions: Scissors, yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Yarn Substitutions & Customization
One of the best things about this pattern is its flexibility! The stitch multiple and easy repeats make it very simple to use any yarn weight with an appropriately sized hook. Whether you prefer a lighter DK version for a spring accessoryor a chunky weight for extra coziness, you can easily adapt the pattern to suit your needs.
Best Yarn for Donations
If you are planning to donate your scarf, I recommend avoiding yarn with a high wool content, as many people are allergic to wool. Acrylic yarns are an excellent choice for donation projects because they wash well, are easy to care for, come in a wide variety of colors, and are generally hypoallergenic.

How to Customise Your Scarf
While I’ve kept the number of raised dot rows minimal to avoid catching on coat zippers, you can easily adjust the pattern to add more dots if you prefer! I’ve included clear notes in the crochet scarf pattern on how to modify it to suit your style.

Pattern Notes:
- Written in US terms.
- Where instructions differ for sizing these will be noted as: 3-5 (5-7, 8-10, teen, women’s sm, women’s med, women’s lg, men’s sm, men’s med, men’s lg)
- Your stitch counts for each row will remain the same i.e 15 (15, 19, 19, 23, 23, 27, 27, 31, 31)
- This pattern is worked in short rows from bottom to top.
- Chain stitches at the beginning of any rows do not count as a st until specifically stated.
- Even numbered rows are the right side of your scarf.
- If you are making this in two colours as I have please pay attention to where it tells you to change colour within the pattern.
- When working your slip stitches, they do count as a stitch in row 5 so be sure not to work them too tightly as you will be working into them on the next row!
- To amend the length of your scarf, you can repeat either rows 7-8 or rows 12-13 (12-13, 12-13, 14-15, 14-15, 14-15, 14-15, 16-17, 16-17, 16-17) to make these sections larger.
Special stitches:
Treble Crochet – YO twice, insert hook into next st to be worked, YO and pull through (4 loops on hook). *YO and pull through 2 loop on hook*. Rep from * to * twice more until you have 1 loop on hook. Treble crochet completed.
Back loop: The photo below shows you which loop is the back loop.

Foundation half double crochet – You can find my tutorial on the foundation stitches (you will find the hdc at about 14:20 mins into the videos):
For right handed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPHOG4VIi_Q&t=109s
Left handed – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqkTFzCja-A
Camel Stitch: This is also known as “third loop” hdc. To do this:
YO, insert hook into the THIRD loop of the HDC from the previous row (this will be a horizontal bar below the two loops you normally work into. If working in rows, it will be on the side facing you). Pull up a loop, YO and pull through all 3 loops on your hook.
