Make a unisex Gift Card Holder – A Quick and Easy Crochet Project
Spread the love

Are you looking for a fun and easy crochet project? How about making a unisex gift card holder? Perfect for birthdays, anniversaries or just because gifts. It is a great way to give the special person in your life a handmade gift that will be useful and treasured forever!

Sometimes we just do not have the time or inspiration to make something bigger, and a gift card holder is a wonderful solution.

All you need is about 40 yards of yarn and a hook, and you will have a unique gift that will be appreciated and enjoyed.

So, grab some yarn and get crocheting!

Inspiration behind the design

I was looking for some inspiration for quick crochet projects that would fit into a Christmas stocking. It had to be:

  • Small enough
  • Unisex
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Be considered a scrap busting project
  • Work up quickly

This year I have designed a lot of unisex projects that are great for part used skeins. And I wanted to carry this through again with this pattern.

Gift cards are something that are very popular. We all know someone who is hard to buy, or make, for. Or maybe they have asked specifically for a gift card. With this gift card holder you can add that little touch of handmade for any occasion. And the addition of the button means that you can personalise it a little bit more.

Construction of the design

The Trinity Gift Card Holder crochet pattern is made in one piece and in the round to minimise sewing and stitching. The only sewing you need to do is to attach a button and sew in your ends.

It uses both the third loop and trinity stitches, so is suitable for a confident beginner / intermediate crocheter. You should be able to work this one up in less than an hour.

The use of the trinity stitch was perfect for this design as it does not create any gaps in the project. So if you prefer, you can add a zipper rather than a button and make a little purse out of this pattern!

The Yarn

You can use any #4 weight (aran) yarn that you have on hand, provided that you can meet gauge with it. If your gauge is too big your gift card holder will be bigger than stated.

For my gift card holders I used Paintbox Cotton Aran.

This cotton is easy to work with, durable, keeps it’s colour and shape and comes in a whole variety of fantastic colours. Not to mention is washes great!

But you can use any suitable yarn you have on hand for this pattern.

Tester Appreciation:

My testers seemed to really enjoy working up this pattern. In fact several of them made more than one! And they turned out great…

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

Any 4 weight yarn of your choosing – I recommend cotton for this project but that is not essential. I used paintbox cotton aran.
4mm hook
1 button of your choosing
Scissors
Tapestry Needle
Stitch Markers optional to mark first or last stitch of the round.
Measuring Tape
Sewing needle and thread for the button.

Gauge:

Gauge is not important for this project as long as you are consistent and happy with how your stitches look.
For my version my gauge was 5 sc sts and 4 rows per inch.

Sizing:

My card holder finished was 4” wide by 3.2” tall

Abbreviations used:

CH(s) – chain(s)
St(s) – Stitch(es)
Rep – Repeat
SC—single crochet
HDC—half-double crochet
SC3Tog – Single crochet 3 together
SS – slip stitch
FO—fasten off
YO—yarn over

Other notes:

Written in US terms
St counts are given at the end of each round in brackets.
Ch1 start does not count as a st unless stated otherwise
The Ch1 that ends the trinity stitch does count as a st.
This pattern is worked in rounds, so you may find it useful to use a stitch marker to mark the first or the last stitch of a round.
Make sure to turn where the pattern tells you to! Otherwise your textured stitch in the middle section will look very different.

Special Stitches:

Trinity Stitch: To work this stitch you SC3Tog (the st you have just worked and the next 2 sts to be worked) by:

Insert hook into stitch you have just worked, YO, pull through, insert hook into next st, YO and pull through, insert hook into next st, YO and pull through, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

You can find my photo tutorial with videos to both right and left handed tutorials for this stitch here.

CH1, SC in each st up to the marked stitch. SS into the marked stitch. CH12 (or enough to create a loop big enough to go around your chosen button). SS into same st. SC in next st and each remaining st around. SS to join, (35 SC, 1 chain loop)

FO and weave in ends.

Attach button to front of project.

And there you have it-a great little gift carder business card holder that will work up quickly!
