A Quick and Easy Halloween Crochet Coaster

There is something very satisfying about a crochet project that looks much more complicated than it actually is, and the Web of Stitches Crochet Coaster definitely falls into that category!

Inspired by the delicate structure of a spider web, this crochet coaster pattern uses chains and front post double crochet stitches to create the open, web-like texture you see in the centre. A round of half double crochet provides a little more structure around the outside and finishes everything off nicely.

And the best bit? There are only six rounds to crochet!

So, if you are looking for a quick Halloween crochet project that you can make between larger WIPs, add to your seasonal décor or whip up as a last-minute gift, this one will fit the bill nicely.

You only need a basic understanding of half double crochet and double crochet to get started. If front post stitches are new to you, don’t let them put you off. They sound much more intimidating than they actually are, and this little project is a great opportunity to practise them without committing to something enormous.

No one needs their first attempt at a new technique to involve a 60-inch blanket. 😆

The Inspiration Behind the Web of Stitches Crochet Coaster

Would you believe me if I told you this design wasn’t meticulously planned out in advance?

I was actually experimenting with different crochet textures when I stumbled across the beginnings of this one. As I played around with the stitches, the texture started reminding me of a spider web — and from there, the Web of Stitches Crochet Coaster pretty much designed itself!

I had been wanting to create a quick Halloween crochet pattern that wasn’t overly complicated and didn’t require you to head out and buy lots of yarn. Halloween projects are fun, but I also think they should be the sort of projects you can squeeze in amongst everything else you’re making at this time of year.

So when I sat down with my hook, this is simply what came to me.

And I love it!

One of my favourite things about this crochet coaster pattern is just how much fun you can have with colour. I’ve used a striking red and black combination for mine, but there is absolutely no need to stick to traditional Halloween colours.

Try orange and black, purple and green, black and white, or perhaps a variegated yarn for the web with a solid border. You could even forget Halloween colours completely and make a set that works with your everyday décor.

Better still, because each coaster uses such a small amount of yarn, this is a fantastic opportunity to raid those part-used skeins lurking in your stash.

You know the ones. They’re too useful to throw away but apparently not useful enough to have found a project yet. Their time has come!

How Is This Crochet Coaster Constructed?

The Web of Stitches Crochet Coaster is worked flat in rounds from the centre outwards.

Despite the detailed appearance of the finished web, the construction is surprisingly simple. You’ll use:

• half double crochet stitches
• front post double crochet stitches
• chains
• slip stitches

The front post double crochet stitches help to create those raised lines that give the centre its spider-web-inspired appearance, while the half double crochet stitches provide more substance and structure around the outside of the coaster.

The entire coaster pattern is only six rounds, so once you have made one and understand how the stitches work together, these really are incredibly quick to crochet.

Make one for your desk, create a matching set for Halloween, pop a few into a seasonal gift basket or make enough to scatter around the house ready for spooky season.

Web of Stitches Crochet Coaster Pattern Specifics

Skill Level

Advanced Beginner / Confident Beginner

You should be comfortable working basic half double crochet and double crochet stitches. The pattern also uses front post double crochet stitches to create the textured web effect.

If you haven’t tried front post stitches before, this small project is a great place to start!

Finished Size

Approximately 4.5 – 5″ square. To increase the sizing you can go up to a 5mm hook with the 4 weight (aran) cotton.

Gauge

Gauge is not important for this project, as long as you are consistent and happy with it!

It isn’t usually as crucial for a coaster as it would be for something wearable, but it will affect the finished size of your project and the amount of yarn you use.

Materials

You will need:

• #4 weight / worsted or Aran weight yarn – approx 25 yards in total.
• 4mm (G-6) crochet hook
• Scissors
• Yarn needle for weaving in ends
• Stitch markers if desired

Yarn used: Drop Paris Cotton

This is a great stash-busting Halloween crochet pattern, so don’t be afraid to experiment with those smaller amounts of #4 weight yarn you already have.

I used 25 yards of Drops Paris Cotton.

Abbreviations

This pattern is written using US crochet terminology.

• CH(s) – chain(s)
• MR – Magic Ring
• St(s) – stitch(es)       Rep – repeat
• Sk – skip
• hdc –half double crochet
• dc – double crochet
• FPDC – front post double crochet
• SS – slip stitch
• YO – yarn over
• FO – fasten off 
• [ ] – all sts within these are to be worked into the same st or chain space.
• * to * – Everything between these two * are to be repeated around.
• ^ – indicates where the final repeat will end if it does not complete the full repeat.

Special Stitches

Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc):

To work a fpdc you work a dc, but instead of inserting your hook into the next stitch you insert your hook around the post of the stitch below from the front to the back and then out of the front again.

YO, insert hook around the post of the stitch that you are working from the front to the back and out of the front again (as per fig photo above), YO and pull through (3 loops on hook). YO and pull through 2 loops on hook, YO and pull through last 2 loops on hook.

The front post stitches are what help give this coaster pattern its distinctive raised spider web texture.

Pattern Notes

• This pattern is written in US crochet terms.
• The coaster is worked flat in rounds from the centre outwards.
• The pattern contains six rounds.
• CH1 stitches at the beginning of a round do not count as a st unless otherwise stated. 
• Stitch counts are given at the end of each round. 
• Please read the pattern and ensure you are comfortable with it before starting your project.
• I changed colour as I started round 6. If you would like to do so this is where I recommend changing colour. However, if you want your coaster a little larger you may want to work an additional round (round 7) of all hdc sts. Alternatively, change colour at any point!

Round 1:       In MR, hdc 8.  SS to first hdc to join (8)

Note: I changed colour here for one more round on my version.

Round 6 :     Ch1, hdc in first st, *2 hdc in ch2 sp, ^ hdc in next st, [2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc] in ch 2 sp, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in next st, 3 hdc in ch 3 sp, hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next ch 3 sp, hdc in next st. * Rep from * to * around, ending the final repeat at ^. (84 hdc, 4 ch 2 sps)

Note: The next round is optional if you would like a slightly larger coaster.

Optional Round 7: Ch1, hdc in each st around, ensuring that you work [2hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc] in each corner ch2 sp. SS to first hdc to join.

FO and weave in ends.
