Inspiration behind the design

The inspiration behind The Rocky Ridges Tunisian Scarf stems from my recent revisit of the Learn to Tunisian Crochet CAL. We explored 12 of the foundational Tunisian stitches. This CAL is a perfect starting point for anyone wanting to learn the basics of Tunisian crochet. It helps you build confidence stitch by stitch. After completing the CAL, I knew I wanted to continue designing beginner-friendly Tunisian crochet patterns that anyone could pick up with ease. This scarf is the first of those new designs.

I fell in love with the wide ribs stitch, which creates a bold, textured effect. It uses the very simple tunisian knit stitch and tunisian purl stitch. I used a variation of this technique to design the ribbing at the top and bottom of the scarf, giving it a unique look that’s both stylish and cozy.

The rich texture makes this scarf ideal for the men in your life, but it’s versatile enough that women could absolutely wear it too!

This design perfectly balances simplicity with a striking texture, making it a timeless addition to any wardrobe.

Construction of the design

The construction of The Rocky Ridges Tunisian Scarf is simple yet effective, making it a great project for beginners. It is worked in short rows from one end to the other, which allows it to work up fairly quickly.

By alternating two basic stitches—the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) and the Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS)—you create the beautiful wide ribs effect that gives the scarf its distinctive texture. I was immediately drawn to the way these stitches come together. They form bold, striking ridges that add a sophisticated, rugged look to the design.

This alternating stitch pattern is both easy to master and visually stunning. So it is perfect for creating a stylish scarf in no time.

The Yarn

For this free crochet scarf pattern I used 4 weight (Aran) yarn. If you have been following me for any period you will know that I love Paintbox Simply Aran yarn and have plenty of it in my stash. It really is one of my go-to yarns when it comes to looking for a pretty, soft and easy to crochet acrylic yarn.

You can use any 4 weight yarn of your choosing for this easy tunisian scarf and any fiber (keeping in mind any allergies and the ‘scratch’ or ‘itch’ factor that some wool yarns have).
