✨ The Inspiration Behind the Pomander Placemat

Last summer, we moved into a beautiful old stone farmhouse in the countryside. And as you can imagine, between unpacking boxes and tackling DIY jobs that never seem to end, I was craving a little “homey” magic—something handmade that made our space feel warm, inviting, and ours.

That’s when I circled back to one of my all-time favorite stitch combos from the Pomander Scarf—extended half double crochets and crossed double crochets. It’s one of those combinations that just works: simple, textured, and so satisfying to make. I knew immediately it would be perfect for a cozy-yet-stylish placemat design.

When I paired that stitch combo with the rich, rustic colours of WeCrochet’s Dishie Cotton, everything clicked into place.

🧶 Yarn Details – Why I Chose WeCrochet Dishie Cotton

For this project, I used WeCrochet’s Dishie Cotton, and let me tell you, it was meant to be. The color range is absolutely gorgeous—think warm earth tones, mossy greens, terracottas, and soft neutrals—perfect for the country farmhouse vibe I was going for in my new kitchen.

But it’s not just about the colors. Dishie Cotton has that lovely balance between softness and structure, which makes it ideal for placemats. Here’s why cotton is such a great choice for tableware:

  • Heat resistance – Won’t melt or warp under hot plates or mugs (looking at you, acrylic! 👀)
  • Durability – Stands up to everyday use and frequent washing
  • Absorbency – Great for catching drips and spills without becoming soggy or floppy
  • Texture – Shows off stitches beautifully, especially ones with great definition like the Pomander stitch combo

So if you’re planning to actually use your placemats (not just admire them from a distance), cotton is absolutely the way to go.

🎥 Need Help with the Stitches? I’ve Got You!

If you’re new to the stitches used in this placemat or just need a refresher, I’ve got you covered. These two tutorials will walk you through the basics of the extended half double crochet (ehdc) and the crossed double crochet (X stitch):

Special stitches:

Cross Stitch (X st)– this is worked across 2 stitches. *sk one st, dc into next st. Working into missed st and behind the dc you have just made, dc in the missed st.*

You can find my tutorial for the X st at https://youtu.be/fT5lUQ0rI1M

Crossed half double crochet (X-HDC): This is worked exactly the same as the cross stitch except instead of work dc’s you work hdc’s.

Extended half double crochet (ehdc) – YO, insert hook into next st, YO and pull through, YO and pull through one loop on your hook, YO and pull through 3 hoops on hook.

These stitches are perfect for confident beginners wanting to progress from the basic stitches. And once you get the rhythm, they’re almost meditative to work. You’ll find yourself reaching for them in all kinds of future projects!
