The Emanating Bobbles Square

Welcome to the Emanating Bobbles Square, a free crochet granny square pattern designed as part of the 2026 Granny Square Month Crochet Along hosted by Marie Segares of Underground Crafter.

This 8-inch granny square pattern is worked in rounds and features modified bobble stitches that radiate outwards from the centre to create beautiful texture and visual interest. The bobble rounds are worked from the wrong side of the square, which means you’ll turn your work at the beginning of those rounds before continuing.

Don’t worry if bobbles are new to you! I have included video tutorials for both right-handed and left-handed crocheters to help you master the stitch and confidently work through the pattern.

Whether you’re making a granny square blanket, cushion cover, tote bag, or simply building your crochet stitch skills, this square is a fun and satisfying project.

The Inspiration Behind This Granny Square Pattern

I’ve been wanting to design a granny square pattern using bobbles for quite some time.

For one reason or another, it kept being pushed further down my ever-growing list of crochet ideas. Then Marie from Underground Crafter invited me to participate in Granny Square Month, and suddenly it felt like the perfect opportunity to finally bring the idea to life.

I’ve always loved using bobble stitches in crochet designs because they create such fantastic texture with very little effort. A few carefully placed bobbles can completely transform a design, drawing the eye exactly where you want it and creating a wonderfully tactile finish.

If you’ve followed my designs for a while, you’ll know that bobbles have appeared in several of my previous patterns, including the Funky Bobbles Scarf, the Zig Zag and Row of Hearts sections from the Adventure Blanket CAL, and the Bobbles Burp Cloth. They are one of my favourite stitches for adding texture without making a pattern overly complicated.

For this granny square pattern, I wanted the bobbles to appear as though they were radiating outward from the centre of the square, creating movement and interest while still maintaining a clean, classic shape. The result is a textured crochet square that works beautifully on its own or combined with other squares in a larger project.

Construction of the Design

The Emanating Bobbles Square is worked flat in joined rounds from the centre outward.

The square measures approximately 8 inches when completed using the recommended yarn and hook combination.

You can keep the square in a single colour or add colour changes wherever you wish to highlight the textured bobble rounds. This makes it an excellent stash-busting project and a wonderful addition to colourful crochet blankets.

The modified bobble rounds are worked from the wrong side of the square. This simple technique helps the bobbles pop beautifully on the right side of the finished square.

Video tutorials are available to guide you through the bobble stitch and optional colour changes.

Can You Purchase the Printable PDF Pattern?

I have decided that I will not be adding individual square patterns to my online shops at this time. If this changes I will add links to the paid options here.
