Why You’ll Love the Kate Coffee Beanie Cup Cozy

The Kate collection is one of my personal favorites, featuring a gorgeous and timeless stitch combination that works beautifully across all the designs. So far, we have a wrap, hat, scarf, wristlet, baby blanket, and bonnet set—and now, finally, this cozy little number is joining the party as a free pattern!

Our collections are named after the people we love, and this one is inspired by my sister, Kate. If you’ve been following along, you might have seen that we also have a Hannah collection (Kate’s identical twin) and some Susan designs (both my mum and my baby sister are named Susan!). You get the idea—crochet and family go hand in hand around here!

The Best Yarn for a Crochet Coffee Cup Cozy

When making a crochet cup cozy, I always recommend using cotton yarn—and here’s why:

✅ Holds its shape – Unlike acrylic, cotton won’t stretch out over time.
✅ Heat-resistant – The thicker cotton fabric provides a better barrier to protect your hands from hot drinks.
✅ Easy to clean – Cotton can be washed at higher temperatures, making it perfect for those inevitable coffee spills.
✅ Durable & long-lasting – Cotton yarn wears well, even with daily use.
✅ Readily available – You can find it in craft stores and online in so many beautiful colors to match your style!

The Perfect Handmade Gift

Crochet coffee cup cozies make wonderful gifts, and I personally love pairing them with a Starbucks reusable cup or a gift card for an extra special touch. They’re perfect for:
✔️ Teachers
✔️ Teens & college students
✔️ Co-workers & Secret Santa gifts
✔️ Anyone who loves their daily coffee (or tea!)

This cozy isn’t just for hot drinks, either! My daughter loves using hers on iced drinks in the summer—especially her “slush drinks” (which are basically ice and flavored syrup). She even insists I keep a couple in my bag for emergencies!

Special Stitches:

Fpdc (Front post double crochet)

You can find a video tutorial on the fpdc at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mawHHZyaWpI

Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.

You work the fphdc in the same way, except you use the hdc instead of the dc stitch.

Bpdc (Back post double crochet)

Yo, insert hook from back to front to back around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.

Camel Stitch –

YO, insert hook into the THIRD loop of the HDC from the previous row (this will be a horizontal bar below the two loops you normally work into.  If working in the round, it will be on the INSIDE of your work).  Pull up a loop, YO and pull thru all 3 loops on your hook.

photo showing you which loop is the front loop, the back loop and the third loop in crochet when working in rounds.

You can find my video tutorial for this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUuktGH7tmw&t=31s

Back Loop Only –

Back loop only is commonly used to create ribbing for projects.    To do this: Ch1, insert hook into the back loop only of indicated stitch and complete the indicated stitch. You can find our video for this at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pl9CRP3bKTc

Crab Stitch –

This is a wonderful border stitch!  To do this: ch1, sc in the stitch to the RIGHT of your hook (you normally work to the left).  Do this all the way around, and slip stitch where you can INSIDE the project.  This automatically creates a twisted “crab claw” look.
