Using just basic crochet stitches, this beginner-friendly blanket is perfect for cosy evenings, thoughtful handmade gifts and adding a little handmade warmth to your home.

Meet the Abbie Blanket – An Easy Free Crochet Blanket Pattern

There’s something about the arrival of autumn that makes me want to reach for my crochet hook, grab a cosy blanket and settle down with a good project, isn’t there?

The evenings are getting darker, the temperatures are dropping, and blanket season is well and truly here!

And what better way to celebrate than with a brand new free crochet blanket pattern?

Meet the Abbie Blanket!

This easy crochet blanket pattern has everything I love in a relaxing project. It uses basic stitches, has a simple 2-row repeat that’s easy to remember, and creates a lovely texture without any complicated techniques.

Once you’ve worked a few rows, you’ll soon find yourself settling into a comfortable rhythm. It’s the sort of project you can pick up after a busy day without having to spend ten minutes figuring out where you left off!

Whether you’re relatively new to crochet or have been crocheting for years, I think you’ll really enjoy making this one.

And with 9 sizes available, from a small security blanket right through to a King-size blanket, there’s an option for just about everyone.

The Inspiration Behind the Abbie Blanket

If you’ve been following Sunflower Cottage Crochet for a while, you may already be familiar with my Abbie Collection.

The collection is named after my niece, Abbie, and features designs that use the same easy stitch combination.

I’ve always loved how such simple stitches can work together to create something that looks far more complicated than it actually is. So adding a blanket to the collection seemed like a natural next step.

But this particular blanket also has a lovely family connection.

Abbie’s brother, Thomas, is expecting his first child in December, and I wanted to make something special to welcome the newest addition to our family.

So I made a baby-sized Abbie Blanket for little Oliver!

It seemed rather fitting that Oliver should have a blanket from the collection named after his auntie, don’t you think?

I love making handmade gifts for new babies. There’s something very special about knowing that you’ve put time, thought and love into every stitch.

Of course, once I’d finished the baby blanket, I couldn’t resist working out the instructions for lots of other sizes too!

And that’s how the Abbie Blanket grew into a pattern with 9 sizes, suitable for everything from tiny keepsakes to big, cosy blankets for your bed.

Why You’ll Love This Easy Crochet Blanket Pattern

There are plenty of reasons why I think the Abbie Blanket will become one of those patterns you return to again and again.

  • Easy 2-row repeat: Once you’ve mastered the first few rows, the stitch pattern is simple to remember.
  • Beginner-friendly stitches: You only need chains, single crochet and double crochet stitches.
  • Beautiful texture: The stitch combination creates an interesting fabric without complicated techniques.
  • 9 sizes included: Make anything from a security blanket to a King-size bed blanket.
  • Simple construction: The blanket is worked in rows, with an easy border added at the end.
  • Perfect for gifting: Ideal for baby showers, birthdays, housewarmings or Christmas presents.
  • Relaxing to make: A lovely project for those evenings when you want to crochet without concentrating too hard.

And because the stitch pattern is so versatile, you can easily change the colours to suit whoever you’re making it for.

How Is the Abbie Blanket Constructed?

One of my favourite things about this free crochet blanket pattern is how straightforward the construction is.

The blanket is worked flat in rows, using an easy-to-remember 2-row stitch repeat.

There are no complicated joins, separate squares to sew together or fancy shaping techniques to worry about.

Simply work your rows until your blanket reaches the required length for your chosen size.

Once the main blanket is complete, you’ll add a simple crochet border to give everything a neat, finished appearance.

That’s it!

The repetitive nature of the stitch pattern makes this a particularly enjoyable project when you want something relaxing to work on.

It’s also a great choice if you’re looking to build confidence with your basic crochet stitches.

Why Blankets Are Such Great Crochet Projects

I think every crocheter should have at least one blanket project on the go! Blankets are wonderfully versatile, and they don’t have to be complicated to be beautiful.

For beginners, they’re an excellent way to practise stitch consistency, turning chains and keeping your edges straight.

For more experienced crocheters, they’re a chance to enjoy the process without constantly learning new techniques.

They’re also fantastic handmade gifts. A baby blanket can become a treasured keepsake, a cosy throw makes a lovely housewarming present, and a larger blanket can add a personal touch to a bedroom.

And let’s not forget donation projects. Handmade blankets are often appreciated by charities, hospitals and community organisations, although it’s always worth checking their requirements before you start.

Best of all, a blanket is a project you can enjoy for weeks, picking it up whenever you have a spare few minutes.

Abbie Blanket Sizes – From Security to King

I’ve written this easy crochet blanket pattern in 9 different sizes, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs.

The smallest size is a security blanket, perfect for a small handmade gift or keepsake.

At the other end of the scale, the King-size version is ideal for anyone who loves a generously sized blanket to snuggle under.

There are also plenty of options in between, including sizes suitable for babies, throws and beds.

You’ll find the finished measurements and starting chain information for each size in the pattern instructions below.

My tip: If you’re making a blanket as a gift, think about how the recipient will use it. A smaller blanket might be ideal for a pram or sofa, while a larger size is wonderful for curling up on chilly evenings.

Baby safety note: Handmade blankets should not be placed in a baby’s sleep space. Follow current safe-sleep guidance, and use baby blankets only in appropriate supervised situations.

Yarn and Hook Recommendations

For my Abbie Blanket, I used #4 weight (Aran/Worsted) yarn with a 5mm crochet hook.

This yarn weight is a lovely choice for blankets because it creates a cosy fabric without being excessively bulky.

It’s also widely available in a fantastic range of colours, making it easy to customise your project.

Can I Use a 6mm Hook Instead?

Absolutely! If you prefer a slightly looser fabric, or find that you naturally crochet quite tightly, you can use a 6mm hook instead.

Just bear in mind that using a larger hook will usually make your stitches bigger, so your finished blanket will be a little larger than the measurements given in the pattern.

Your yarn usage may also change.

If you’re making a blanket where the finished size matters, I recommend checking your gauge before you begin.

And remember, there’s no rule saying you have to use exactly the same colours as I have. Choose something that makes you smile!

Skills You’ll Need

The Abbie Blanket is designed to be accessible to crocheters of all skill levels, including confident beginners.

You’ll need to know how to work:

  • Chain stitches (ch)
  • Single crochet stitches (sc)
  • Double crochet stitches (dc)
  • Turn your work at the end of a row
  • Weave in your ends

All stitches are written in US crochet terminology.

If you’re still building your confidence, don’t worry. The stitch combination is simple, and the 2-row repeat gives you plenty of opportunities to practise.

Once you’ve worked through the first few repeats, you’ll soon get the hang of it.

Customising Your Abbie Crochet Blanket

One of the things I love most about simple crochet blanket patterns is how easy they are to make your own.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Keep it classic with one colour. A single colour allows the texture of the stitches to shine. Creams, soft greys and warm neutrals are lovely choices for a timeless blanket.

Try stripes. The 2-row repeat lends itself beautifully to stripes. You could change colours every few repeats or create wider blocks of colour.

Use up your yarn stash. Have lots of leftover Aran-weight yarn from other projects? A colourful stash-busting blanket could be just the thing!

Choose colours to suit the season. Warm rusts, golden yellows and rich greens are perfect for autumn, while soft pastels make lovely baby blankets.

Make it bigger or smaller. Choose one of the 9 sizes included, or adjust the length by working more or fewer repeats.

Change the border colour. A contrasting border can really make the finished blanket pop without adding any extra complexity.

However you decide to make yours, I’d love to see the finished result!

Border around your blanket:

Note1: You may find it easier to place a stitch marker in each of the 4 corner ch1 stitches.

Note 2: To make a chunkier border simply repeat round 2 as many times as desired.

Note 3: If changing colour start in the first stitch of your last row by attaching your yarn,

Round 1: ch1, *[sc, ch1, sc] into first st (to create the corner), sc in next st and in each stitch across to the next corner, turn your work 90 degrees. [sc, ch1, sc] into corner stitch, sc evenly down the side of your blanket (I found that 3 sts per 2 rows worked well for me) until you reach the next corner st* Repeat from * to * twice more times, slip stitch to join.

Round 2: Ch1, sc in each st around making sure to work [sc, ch1, sc] in each ch1 corner space.

Finishing Your Blanket

Once you’ve completed your border, fasten off and weave in any remaining ends securely.

If desired, you can gently block your blanket to help even out the stitches and give it a neat finish.

And there you have it – your very own Abbie Blanket!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Abbie Blanket

Is this free crochet blanket pattern suitable for beginners?

Yes! The Abbie Blanket uses basic crochet stitches and an easy 2-row repeat, making it a great project for confident beginners.

If you can chain, single crochet and double crochet, you already know the main stitches you’ll need.

How many sizes are included in the Abbie Blanket pattern?

The pattern includes 9 sizes, ranging from a small security blanket right through to a King-size blanket.

This makes it easy to use the same pattern for different projects and occasions.

Can I use a 6mm crochet hook instead of a 5mm hook?

Yes, you can! A 6mm hook will generally produce a slightly looser fabric and a larger finished blanket.

Just remember that your finished measurements and yarn usage may differ from those stated in the pattern.

What yarn is best for the Abbie Blanket?

I recommend #4 weight Aran/Worsted yarn.

It’s a lovely all-round choice for crochet blankets, providing warmth, texture and plenty of colour options.

Choose a yarn that’s comfortable against the skin and appropriate for the blanket’s intended use.

Can I make the Abbie Blanket in different colours?

Of course! The simple stitch repeat works beautifully in solid colours, stripes and colour blocks.

You can even use leftover yarn from other projects to create a unique blanket.

Is the Abbie Blanket worked in one piece?

Yes. The blanket body is worked flat in rows, so there’s no need to make separate squares or sew sections together.

Once you’ve completed the body, you simply add the border.

Can I make the Abbie Blanket longer?

Absolutely. Just continue working the 2-row repeat until you reach your desired length.

Keep in mind that a longer blanket will require additional yarn.

Where can I get the printable Abbie Blanket pattern?

You can purchase the ad-free PDF in my website shop, Etsy shop or Ravelry store.

You can also claim the PDF for free on 28th October 2026 as part of the Fireside Comforts Event, during its 24-hour promotional window.

The written pattern will remain free on this blog.
