Deck the Halls with Stars: Free Crochet Star Pattern for Tree Ornaments

What’s that twinkle in your stash? Oh yes, it’s finally time to deck the halls with something handmade, heartfelt, and just a little bit sparkly. Welcome to the fifth and final pattern in the Scrappy Holidays Christmas in July CAL — a crochet star that’s as versatile as it is charming. ✨
This little beauty is perfect for adding a homemade touch to your holiday décor, but don’t box it into just one season—stars are timeless! Use it as a Christmas ornament, a gift tag, an appliqué, or even the top of a bookmark. And let’s be honest, it’s also the perfect excuse to bust out your scrappy yarn pile and do something merry with it.
You can find all 5 of the patterns featured in the Scrappy Holidays CAL for free on my blog posts.

About the Crochet Star Pattern
This crochet star might look intricate, but thanks to step-by-step video tutorials for both right- and left-handed crocheters, it’s totally doable—even if you’re a confident beginner ready to level up.
The pattern is officially labeled intermediate, mainly because it uses the single crochet two together (sc2tog) technique and you’ll need to keep an eye on your stitch placements to maintain that crisp five-pointed shape. But don’t let that scare you off—I’ve got you covered every step of the way.
What You’ll Need:
- Small amounts of yarn (any weight will do—go wild!)
- Ribbon, a button, or scrap yarn if you’d like to add a hanging loop
- Your usual crochet hook for your chosen yarn weight or you can go one size smaller if you prefer)
- A cup of something festive (optional, but strongly encouraged)
Make it Your Own
The pattern is written for multiple rounds, but here’s the fun part—you don’t have to do them all. Stop after Round 3 if you’d like a smaller star, or keep going for more drama and texture. It’s modular, adorable, and wonderfully stash-friendly.
