How to Create Beautiful Christmas Ornaments Using Scrap Yarn Granny Squares

If you’re looking for a quick, festive, and fabulously fun way to use up those leftover yarn bits, then this scrap yarn granny square project is just what your holiday season needs!
This sweet little design is part of the Scrappy Holidays Christmas in July CAL, where we’re taking scraps and turning them into charming, handmade Christmas tree ornaments. This one in particular comes with a bit of a nudge from a fellow designer. Kristine from Ambassador Crochet suggested I include a granny square ornament in the collection. And she was absolutely right!
Traditional granny squares are the poster ‘boy’ of crochet—instantly recognizable, endlessly customizable, and always stylish. So, of course, they had to make an appearance in this CAL! And let’s be honest: anything that gives us an excuse to play with color combinations and clear out the scrap stash is a win.

📅 About the Scrappy Holidays CAL
This ornament is Day 1 of my Scrappy Holidays – A Christmas in July CAL and featured on 28th July 2025. Over 5 festive days, I’m releasing 5 quick and easy ornament patterns on the blog—each one designed to help you bust that scrap stash and bring some holiday joy into your crochet life.

🎄 Why You’ll Love This Scrap Yarn Granny Square Ornament
This ornament pattern works up in just 5 quick rounds and takes under an hour to make (I whipped mine up in about 15 minutes, but I’ve been told I crochet at lightning speed! ⚡).
You’ll also be introduced to the twisted single crochet, which gives that lovely little detail around the edge—just enough to make it pop!
The beauty of this project lies in the colors. Each round is a new opportunity to mix and match your scrap yarn in festive combinations—think traditional reds and greens, cozy winter whites, or even bold jewel tones if you’re feeling fancy. You’ll be surprised how different each ornament looks just by changing up the yarn order.
✨ Bonus Ways to Use Your Granny Square Ornament
Oh, the versatility! This little square is not just for hanging on trees (although it does look fabulous among the fairy lights). Here are a few other ways to use it:
- Add 2 or 3 more rounds and you’ve got yourself a festive coaster.
- Use thicker yarn and a larger hook to make a statement ornament or a mini wall hanging.
- Attach a scrap yarn or ribbon hanger to the corner and use it as a gift tag—a charming touch for any handmade present.
- Attach it to a chain of yarn to create some Christmas bunting!
However you use it, this scrap yarn granny square ornament adds a handmade sparkle to your holiday season.

🧶 Materials & Details
- Yarn: Assorted scrap yarn in Christmas or winter colorways (any weight will work). I used approximately
- 3 yards for round 1
- 6 yards for round 2
- 9 yards for round 3
- 5 yards for round 4
- 10 yards for round 5
- Hook: Size to match your yarn for a slightly looser look. If you want it nice and tight so it stays taught on the tree, go down one whole hook size e.g. instead of using a 5mm hook, use a 4mm hook. (I used a 4mm hook and #4 (aran) weight yarn for mine.)
- Other: Tapestry needle, scissors, and optional ribbon/yarn for hanging
Pattern Notes:
- Written in US terms.
- CH1 stitches at the beginning of each round do not count as a st unless otherwise stated.
- CH3 sts at the start of the round do count as stitches.
Special stitches:
Twisted sc: Insert hook into next st to be worked, YO and pull through, Raise your pull through stitch to the height of a hdc, twist your hook 360 degrees (all of the way around), YO and pull through both loops on hook.
