Do you have a collection of small crochet scraps that you don’t know what to do with? How about putting them to use by creating my unique crochet textured blanket square pattern!

This cheerful design gives any space an inviting and handmade touch. With its stunning stitch work it will also look great as part of an afghan or even in a pillow. As crocheted items are often treasured for years, this project is the perfect way to put those scrappy bits of yarn into something useful and beautiful.

Let me show you around the design so that you can start working on your own special scrap blanket today!

Inspiration behind the design

This square was designed specifically for the 2023 mystery CAL hosted by Heather at the Unraveled Mitten.

My specifications were that it had to be 12″ square and have some texture in there. Whether it was worked in rows or rounds was not important. So I decided to challenge myself a little bit more and create something that was worked in rounds.

I am going to be honest here – I think this square is much more beautiful than these photos make it look. The close-up pics do it more justice I think.

Construction of the design

This one is probably more of an intermediate skill level pattern. It uses crossed double crochets and there are a couple of rounds where you have to be careful to follow the instructions and turn your work.

As mentioned above, this crochet blanket square is worked in the round, starting at the centre and building it up.

This is actually great if you can’t meet my gauge!

Why? Because you can easily just keep following the pattern until your square is about 11.5″ square and then move straight to the last round to finish it off.

Blocking will always give your crochet blanket squares a much nicer finish and make it easier to join them all when you are ready to.

The Yarn

For both of my versions of this crochet blanket square pattern I used paintbox simply aran yarn. I was so pleased when this was listed as an option for the mystery CAL! Not only did I have both the purple and sage green in my stash from previous projects, the range of colour options in this yarn is just amazing! I had plenty of this yarn left over from previous projects and blankets so it was a huge bonus that I could create these with what I already had in my stash!

I really like paintbox simply aran yarn because it is 100% acrylic and is really easy to care for – you can machine wash and tumble dry this yarn. And it looks great for years! There is a reason I have so much of it in my stash and stock up whenever there is a sale on it…
