Woodland Whispers Crochet Blanket Section – Free Pattern with Easy Crochet Cables

Welcome to the Adventure in Cables Blanket Crochet Along! 🎉 Kristine from Ambassador Crochet and I are so excited to bring you the second blanket in our Adventure Blanket Series Crochet Alongs. This time, we’re diving into the wonderful world of easy crochet cables—a technique that looks intricate and textured but is much more beginner-friendly than it first appears.

Each week, we will both release 2 sections of our blankets. The one you work will depend upon the answer to the question for that section. By the end, you’ll have a truly stunning heirloom to keep or gift. If you’ve been wanting to try cables (without the headache), this CAL is the perfect opportunity.
Section One: Woodland Whispers
To kick things off, I’m sharing my very first section of the blanket: Woodland Whispers. 🌲✨
This design is a traditional take on crochet cables and may look familiar if you remember the cabled owl patterns that were wildly popular a few years ago. The stitch combination has been a favorite among designers and crocheters for many years—and for good reason. It’s timeless, textured, and adds so much character to a blanket.
Don’t worry if you’ve never tried crochet cables before—this section is designed to be approachable, and I’ll walk you through every step.

Yarn I Used
For my version, I decided to spoil myself. 🧶 I used Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted and this section was made in the shade Windsor.
- Weight: #4 Worsted
- Fiber: 100% wool
- Why I chose it: It’s luxuriously soft, easy to work with, and becomes even more beautiful once washed. Since this blanket will be a long-term treasure, I wanted a yarn that felt special and durable (I knew that it was going to be a special one!)
Of course, you can use any worsted-weight yarn you love, but if you want that buttery softness, stitch definition and have a few extra pennies that you can spend on yarn, I highly recommend giving Rowan Pure Wool Superwash a try.
Step-by-Step Video Tutorials
I know cables can feel intimidating if you’ve never tried them before, so I’ve created step-by-step video tutorials for both left-handed and right-handed crocheters. These videos will guide you through the Woodland Whispers section from start to finish.

Before we get to the free pattern, there are some things you need to know:
- Written in US terms.
- Ch1 start does not count as a st unless stated otherwise.
- You work the repeat for each vertical blanket section until it is 60″ long or as long as desired.
- Be sure not to work your cable stitches too tight as it will pull and warp your project!
- When working FPDC or FPTC you will work into the stitch two rows below e.g. you are working row 7 so you work your front posts into the stitches from row 5.
- Straight cable sections use FPdc. Crossed cable sections use FPtr.
- The odd numbered rows are the right side of the work.
- Stitch counts are given at the end of each row.
- After Row 3 you will work FPDC or FPTC sts only into FPDC or FPTC sts from the row 2 rows below.
- When working a Front Post stitch this will count as a st against your current row. So for example, ‘SC in the first st, FPDC around next st’ – this FPDC counts as a st so you miss one stitch from the sc row below before working the next sc.
Special Stitches:
FPdc (Front Post double crochet) – yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of indicated st, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 2 times.
FPtr (Front Post treble) – yo 2 times, insert hook from front to back to front around st indicated, yo, pull up loop, [yo, pull through 2 loops] 3 times.
FSC (foundation single crochet) – This is an alternative to the chain start. I have both left and right handed video tutorials on how to do this on YouTube: For right-handed crocheters – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPHOG4VIi_Q&t=191s For left-handed crocheters – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqkTFzCja-A&t=24s
