The bauble square coaster is a great one to try if you are new to the tapestry crochet technique. It is also a great scrap-busting project.

With Christmas decorations anything goes when it comes to colour choices. So whether you prefer the nordic contrast of red and white or are inspired by the Northern Lights this coaster will look great.

Inspiration behind the design

Veronika (of Blue Star Crochet fame) was mulling over a concept she wanted to try. She got in touch and asked me if I would like to participate. The idea for the Cozy Christmas Cushion was brewing; 9 designers creating one small tapestry crochet square of 21 stitches by 23 rows which would be sewn together to make a sweet Christmas themed cushion.

My response? Sounds like fun, count me in!

And this is what I came up with…

Construction of the design

This bauble square coaster is worked using the tapestry crochet technique. This is where you use single crochets to create a fabric, changing colour only for the design (in this case the bauble).

The bauble square is worked flat and because it is only 21 stitches by 23 rows in size it works up quickly!

The Yarn

As this project is so small, I raided my part used skeins and scrap bucket. Sometimes this is a bit of a rabbit hole for me. I spend more time tidying the scrap bucket than necessary and have way too many colour choices resulting in a lot of procrastination! Even if my yarn colours were set by Veronika for the Cozy Christmas Cushion CAL as white, red and green! Now I had to go digging for the right colours.

This time, I was pleasantly surprised. When the little red scrap ball was at the top of my bucket I scooped it up immediately. I knew I had a part used skein white in the same yarn on my shelf.

So it was Caron Simply Soft for the win again!

The pattern specifics:

Materials:

·       #3 (DK) or #4 (aran) weight yarn of choosing in 2 colors (for the Cozy Christmas Cushion you will ned 4 weight!)
·       4 or 5mm hook
·       Stitch markers (optional)
·       Scissors
·       Tapestry needle
Stitch markers (optional to mark the first and last stitches of the row)
Scissors
Tapestry needle

Gauge:

Not important for this project as long as you are consistent. My gauge was 16 sts x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm/ 4 x 4 inch

Sizing:

My crochet bauble square coaster is just over 4″.

Abbreviations used:

·      Ch(s)–chain(s)
·      St(s)–stitch(es)
·      FSC – foundation single crochet
·      W – white
– R – red

Other notes:

·      Written in US terms.
·      Ch1 stitches at the beginning do not count as a st unless otherwise stated. I would recommend starting each row with a Ch1 as this makes it much easier to see that first stitch.
·      The stitch count for every row is 21.
